So one of my headlight bulbs died....I was driving next to a pepboys, so i just went in with one bulb from the car to match it......

I gave it to the guy, and he came back with a 9004 bulb. the one i gave him was also a 9004...

the problem is that the one he gave me does not fit??? it looks identical and works perfectly when plugged in, but the plastic collar around the bulb seems shallower than the original (the one with the grooves) ...something i did not pay attention to at the time...it will simply not seat properly:mad:

Sylvania says 9004 is the appropriate one for our cars ....that is what the old one is, the new one looks identical expect it is manufactured recently and will not fit....what i am missing???

thanks

It worked, the rubber gasket on the bulb was preventing it from seating properly.. i have no clue why (maybe a bit bigger?) so i just used the one from the old bulb...all is good now....

thanks guys

FYIW. Please don't forget that the quartz bulb runs at something like 2000F and any oil from a fingerprint will fail the bulb surface. Make sure the bulb stays really clean prior and during installation.

A little fingerprint won't do anything until it gets hot so always wipe it off with something clean prior to assembly.

Particularly with an early 300E. They need all the lighting they can get.

Oooooooooh.....that's a tactic that will kill you (in many circumstances) with well engineered, German cars.:D

Kevin
Just because the car is does not mean the bulb is.

The problem is the newer bulbs have fatter O ring seals that are harder to press in.

Try inserting the bulb with the red/orange O ring removed and see if it goes right in or not, if it does, it's the o ring.

Maybe put the O ring off the old bulb on to the new bulb.
