What force compels a middle aged man to sell an Oldsmobile and buy a 22 year old 300TD with 169K miles on it? At any rate, it's a done deal and hopefully the beginning of a new car adventure. The car has many small problems, but I have a good mechanic and a strange addiction to the clatter of 5 cylinder diesels. The forum was a great resource and very encouraging of taking the MB plunge.

I'm preparing to sell my Honda Accord and just drive the Mercedes...and I've almost got the loan paid off down to the last $400. Now that's crazy!

Middle Age?

I'm a 50 something, professional and out of all the vehicles from which to choose, old and new, my car of choice is the W123 Diesel, specifically an 84' 300CD. If the W123 you start with is basically sound you shouldn't have that many issues with it.

My 300 TD is a Southern US car and appears to be in reasonable repair. It has numerous small issues: antenae, rear suspension (links only), tranny mount, shaft mount, power door locks, A/C, rear wiper, slightly loose front end and some shifting issues with downshifting. It goes into the shop on Thursday to have most of this addressed. Despite these points, the engine is strong and the interior is pretty good. It drives very well and is a very different experience from all other cars I have driven and owned. Really looking forward to the summer trips to the country.

Cheers

I once owned a wagon, or I should say my lovely wife did. The wagon makes a great family car. Plenty of room for kids, dogs and gear.

Andrew, are you planning on doing a restoration to this vehicle?

Hello MBZ:

This wagon is a good candidate for restoration but for this summer, I hope to get the car set up properly and use it for the cottage run/work etc... After that, I may put it away for the winter to avoid Nova Scotian winters and if possible, do a mini restoration then. Right now, I want to get rid of my other car (Golf) and buy another diesel, sedan or similar. Must be "new to MB" fever!

Cheers

Don't feel like you've lost your mind. I sold an immaculate Buick Park Avenue to buy my W123 and mine was falling apart when I got it. My '83 still needs a lot of work, but it's getting there slowly and I like it a lot; especially the cost of fuel.

Congratulations! No, you are not out of your mind. A 123 is a great choice. I bought mine sight unseen nearly 1,300 miles away. You're gonna love her (and hate her)--but in the end it will be a fun ride.

It’s a real car, built to last and be driven hard. It’s solid, reliable, and fun to drive. Except for the pleasant hum of the engine it’s completely quiet. No squeaks. No rattles. It requires little maintenance and is easy to work on. It cruises down the interstate at 75 mph as if it’s on a rail. The hood star is cool. The visibility is excellent. The ergonomics are outstanding and 25 years ahead of its time.

Doesn’t sound crazy to me.

I'm going to make you feel good and myself feel sad at the same time. No you are not insane for selling your Olds to buy a 123, it's really a very rational decision. I am a middle aged man who GAVE AWAY my 72 Olds Cutlass Supreme to my nephew so I would have the garage space to buy my 2nd 123. Since then I bought a 124 so now I have 3 total and that is just plain sick. My wife reminds me of it daily.......

Cheers back at ya, Cyberbach
