Hi, Very fed up with my 280 now, still got the auto box shivering at low throttle, it goes back tomorrow to a new auto box specialist to see if they can sort it. No one has replied with any help hear, I am not sure whether that is good or bad!.
I have spent a lot of time on the net looking for any help, I have looked at VW and Ford who share the same box I am told, and have big problems.
Is anyone happy with there 280? or I might sell it for a 220.

I pick up a second hand V280 (98 S reg) on Friday, I hope its going to be ok. It test drove fine, its being serviced and valeted. I will keep an eye on the auto box and let you know. I have heard a lot of negative stuff about the V-Class and especially the auto box but decided to take the plunge. I hope I dont need to use the warranty.
I have also done a lot of searching on the web the only in depth stuff seem to be on German web sites [:(] Good luck with you problem.

Hi, I hope all is well.
you will love the performance but hate the fuel consumption, like 95miles to £20 uk pounds.
Look at LPG, it is the way forwards.
Let me now, I have done a lot of research.

V280, Is the car you picking up over the weekend the blue one on ebay? With regard to the V280 autobox, I understand the engine is the VW Corado 2.8 which is used because the merc 2.8 was too big to fit in the V class, perhaps the autobox is not upto the power of the 2.8 V6 engine as most problems appear to be with the V280 compared to the V230? Like I said before, get a good autobox specialist to check it out.

Hi Punjabi, no my one is black (was on ebay though last week, good guess) I have posted some pics of it in the gallery section. Interesting about the VW Corado engine I assumed it was a Merc engine. I had a Golf VR6 several years ago, it was the same as the Corado engine pretty much. The engine is very reliable if well serviced and goes like stink in a Golf. You are right about the auto box even VW had problems with the Golf VR6 auto, it was well known for eating auto boxes. Maybe the Merc gearbox is no better. I have a 3 month warranty with the V280 so will have to hope that it covers this. I will let you know how I get on. Thanks for the info[:)]

Hi Zenman, for sure I am bracing myself for the MPG. I have always had nippy cars and thought that the 2.8 would make the V-class feel less van-like to drive. I have had a look around for LPG conversions but it seems a bit of a mine field, do you know what the costs are for a system installed[?]

Hi,280
You are looking at 2k fitted. Have a look at the link
http://www.go-lpg.co.uk/
He seems to now his stuff!.
I am fitting a Dream LPG kit. http://www.fesautogas.co.uk/
The link's are good. I am fitting most myself and having it set up for £950inc. http://www.lpg-kits.com/sequential.htm.

About the 280 box, it is not a merc box!.
The transmission garage http://www.automaticgearbox.co.uk/aboutus.php
Have found the shiver and are going to remove the box again, there first time I must say, but the third time it has been removed for this problem.

Hi, I still have the shiver with the 280, but now it slams in to second gear as well.
The garage Neal Smith transmissions has now lost, he just does not know what he is doing with it. He has fitted a new valve block?
The Vclass is now going to Midland transmissions, they are going to remove the box and fit a rebuilt one.
I now have the chance to walk away from the 280 as they could not fix it in 30 days and buy a 220cdi.
I think I would miss the performance through.
Has anyone got any points on this. the garage has tried to repair the 280 since February 1st 05 and still not right.

This problem does appear unusual, especially if handled by seemingly specialist garages! Maybe, it is just your particular tranny which is a lemon and needs to be replaced completely. I have a v230 which has a ZF 4HP20 tranny which is smooth as silk. Not sure if the v280 has the same tranny? These gearboxs are pretty reliable as I have a ZF 4HP18 in my SAAB which has covered 150K miles and is equally smooth. If your tranny is a ZF, then try giving Sussex Autos a call and discuss yor problem with them. Keep us posted [:)]

Hi, No it is not a ZF box, it's VW, it is also in the Sharron MPV etc.

The garage has agreed to fit a replacement box from MB together with a new ECU control. it goes in on Tuesday to midland transmissions. This is a garage that was recommended by Sussex transmissions. what the cost will be, I don't know, but that's not my problem.
I will let you now how it go's

Hi, At last.
12 weeks at the garage and it is fixed.

New box,new ECU, new touque converter.
It drives with know shiver.

It has taken from Feb 1st to May 28th 05 to sort this transmission out.

Main dealer sorted it in less than a week, but fitted new parts.

Midland trasmissions, waste of time, and useless.

Neal smith transmissions very bad, infact crap!

In the time it has been away at these places, it has both front wheels damaged, six minor parking dents on the sides, oil on the carpets, and the headlining, and over 1000 miles on the clock!

It came to the main dealer in the end and they sorted it with know problems.

It cost £3900 inc.

All I have to do now is fix the damage.

Is paintless dent removel any good?

Ian.

Zenman,Unfortunate string of events, my condolences, anyway I see you have a 270 CDI, I was thinking of swapping my v220 in for something like that, probably an estate, I was just wondering how you rate the 270 personally? cheer's.

Hi, 220man
The C270cdi is very good, I have it in the avantgard with the sport pack, it is superb.
If you where to by new you could have the 320 or 350 just about to replace the 270.

I cannot comment on the 280 but my 230 has been nothing but trouble.

ECU filled with Water cost £650 to repair
Exhaust snapped in half after two months - MB refused to replace under warranty citing excess rust !!!
Gearbox Cable fell apart £250 to Replace
Front Ball Joint worn £350 to replace

CV joints worn need replacing

autobox does not change gear when it is supposed to
doors unlock all by themselves

this on a vehicle that has covered only 60k miles

I would not buy another one

sorry not a great first post but i am thoroughly pXXXXd off with it

Just an up date. Love it now, it brings a smile when I put my foot down, until I look at the fuel gage that is. Lpg is next, Dream 21N. Then Konis all round, along with new wheels.

Hi all
Well LPG is fitted, and I can say it is very good indeed, it still fly’s for a van, but the fuel gage does not move!

I have pictures of the job for those that are interested I can email.

The auto box is still superb, thank god.

The van has had some more unexpected parts.

New power steering pump £138, not to bad, but at 41000 miles it is!

New petrol injectors X 2 £ 160 each! yes £160 each, and no Patten parts, and not available from anywhere but MB!

New poly vee belt £30.

But I still love it!

I have had the dent's done as well, dent master, no paint, very good £60.

LPG is the way forward.

Hi everyone!
Well I've only had my 280 for a month so am still getting over the honeymoon period!
So far........... It's still lust and a deepening love affair!!!!
I have found that my fear of fuel consumption creates a gear hunt tho! When I'm feeling rich, the whole package works so much better when driven with conviction!
Has to be said.......... I'm in love :)

What LPG system did you go with?

I am considering having it fitted.

I occasionally have the gearbox "shiver", usually at low revs, for example exiting a roundabout. If I give it a bit more throttle, there is no problem.

I have read through your post, and see you had new parts fitted. Was there any single conclusion as to what the problem was, or was it a combination of things?

Thanks
