I'm looking at a 1983 Turbodiesel that had it's harmonic balancer come loose and break. That's how the owner explained it to me.

My question is when that happens will the crankshaft or anything else be damaged that should make me steer clear of the car?

A new balancer was installed and I was told it was sent out to a machince shop to be balanced, like the old one, before it was installed.

Also, check to make sure the harmonic balancer was not welded back on. I had an old mustang (late 70's) with the german capri motor in it, that I found lost the H.B. Whomever had it, then welded it back on causing all kinds of problems. Not saying you could even do that with our MB's, but just passing along one of my bad stories so you do not have one.
Good Luck, Lancer.
