Might be better if you give us more info. First off, have you ever changed the fluid and filter? How many miles are on the car and trans fluid? When it hammers what is the RPM of the engine?

When I just bought the car it had done 106,000 miles, I drove it for 100 miles the car stopped it couldn't move anymore. I drained the ATF, replaced the filter and pan gasket it was back on the road. Now its 113,000 miles. In park position the RPM 900 when it hammers it goes down to 500 the up again.

Maybe you should read the Transmission FAQ in the stickys at the top of the page. But I can't remember anyone describing a hammering. You might see that others have called it a clunk or thump and is probably the same thing you are hearing.

Clunking gear box 722.6xxx

I went through the transmission FAQ and decided to change the ATF, filter and clean the valve body outer part. The car functioned normal for one day now it started clunking again with kick down not functioning.

Must be more than new fluid can fix. Do you have access to a shop with a Star or other MB capable scanner? Sounds like it's time to read the transmission error codes.

My guess would be the springs in the valve body. You mentioned that you cleaned the exterior of the valve body - did you have a look at the springs at that time? The springs are an easy and cheap fix - if you can find them in Malawi.

Thanks Kobus, I will ask the mechanic to check on that one.

Muzikmann, a mechanic from APL came with MB HHT to read the fault codes, I cannot remember the codes but below is what I read on the HHT.

-sporadic idle actuator and gearbox CAN communication error
-sporadic cam shaft position sensor error
-sporadic fuel safety shutdown
the fourth one I have forgotten but it contained something like BAS.

The other

The other observation was that it could not indicate ATF level.
