Had an epiphany this morning when I realized that the diagnostics lines on the 38 pin connector of my 2000 R129 can be read with the flash code adapter that I built for my A124. All I need is a breakout box which I ordered from eBay. Can't believe I had my head up my pooper for so long!

I have never looked at the pinouts of the 38 pin connector but may I assume there is more data than provided to the OBD2 socket?

For a 2000 I believe that is true.

Looks like many changes over time. I guess I'm happy with the current 16 pin port, although my '98 SL500 has both types.

I bought a Bosch hand-held scanner for my 1993 dodge viper because it was both an OBD1 and OBD2 device.
I ordered a 32 pin cable and to my surprise, I was able to connect and read the codes from that port.

Obviously, it's no good to me as the 32 pin port is proprietory and used by the Star Diagnostic system.

I just use the OBD2 port under the steering column.

The OBD-II is generic and is required for all cars sold in the USA since 2016.
It mainly deals with the engine and emission related issues, but there are 4 extra pins available for car manufacturer to customize for their own specific testing functions.
So all the information in the 16-pins OBD-II port are available from the 38-pins port which is specific for MB.

My scanner software has a catalog of generic codes and also manufacturer-specific codes. I assume that my adapter doesn't look at the 4 extra pins. I have never seen any MB specific codes although the software would indicate that.
