OK, the PO of my 300D (4-speed) says the car was imported from Europe. Both he and the title state the car to be an '85, but the vin decoders I'm using report the car to be an '83. Here's the breakdown I got from Mercedes-Benz Club Russia | Âñ¸ î Mercedes-Benz / VIN.

VIN WDB1231301A052777
Model 300 D
Chassis 1231301A052777

Transmission 716005 00 929912
Order 0 3 513 20683
Approx. year 1983
Lights HELLA
Cab 13690
Dealer Belgium (513)
Interior tex-leather galaxy blue (152)
Paint

outside rear view mirror, right, electrically adjustable (l.h.d.)
taxi version, f.r.g, and outside rear view mirror on the right

front folding armrest w202 - housing at front with armrest
593 heat-insulating glass, all-around, heated rear window pane (single-sheet safety glass), band filter
green heat-insulating glass all round, heated rear window, single pane safety glass - tinted strip (с 01.01.1972)
630 ECE warning triangle (с 01.08.1980)
665 (No description for this option)

Anyone know if perhaps when it was titled they confused the year of import with the year of manufacture or how I can check?

Also, my title states my car weighs 2750lbs  As it is a non-turbo, emission control free, manual everything stripper could this weight be accurate?

Weight is correct.. ca. 1250kg.
The diesel engine is a really heavy cast iron lump :)
That actually seems a little light......

The door jamb tag states 1985 as the year of manufacture, but it is not in tact or straight and looks like it may have been removed or replaced. However it is consistent with the VIN by the hood latch. It also states that the bumpers and safety systems are up to spec for the year of mfr (I'm paraphrasing) which would seem to be false since the car was sold in Belgium, has Euro bumpers and aftermarket rear-seatbelts. What is the deal here?

Show us pics of the front seatbelt buckles. The 1983 had different ones than the 1985.

Also, the rear seats had more pleats in a 1985 than in a 1983.

Do you have the original radio? The electronic Becker appeared in 1984-1985, 1983 had a different style.

All these are valid for North American versions, but it's worth a shot...

If production date was different from a date when the car was registered to first owner, than the title would have been issued after the registration papers. I know that in Germany the year often refers to registration year (Erstzullasungjahr) rather than year when the car was actually built (Baujahr). Sometimes they are different. Your car could be built in 83 was registered in 85?

if you take pictures of the engine bay and interior and what not we can tell you what year it is.

Compare the vin on the firewall to the vin on the door jamb.

Well, shucks! Part of the reason I bought this car was I thought it was the last year of the 123 chassis and would have some historical value (to me anyway). Are there any substantive differences between '83s and '85s or just cosmetic stuff like belt buckles and upholstery?

On euro cars the upholstery and carpet pretty much remained the same, meaning the older loop style carpet until the end, and the same number of seat pleats (5?) as the earlier American cars.

I do find it odd that your vin tag is actually riveted on. I can't say I've seen that on a euro before. Aftermarket AC I see as well.

You sure about this?

W123 went into the series 3 (Last update), October 1982.

Which should mean that late 82,83,84 and 85 look the same. (More or less)

Not here, the 82 and 83 have different front seats, but basically the same covers, then the 84 and 85 have new seat covers and some other minor differences. I don't think the european market received the last iteration that was sold here in the states.
