Hello Gang:

Here's the straight deal. Up until the other day, I believed the purpose of a car was to get from point A to point B. Give me enough legroom and headroom, and I was happy as a clam.

After years of hearing from my closest friend about the grandeur of these machines, and a coworker who has a half dozen of them, I started to look for the first time. And over the last couple years, I've been observing various vehicles and didn't quite understand the appeal.

Well, down the road, a couple weeks ago, I passed this beautiful vehicle, from my amateur eye, it looked quite impressive. A 1995 SL500. It looked to be flawless in appearance, at least the body and the paint throughout. The dashboard was spotless. Had 107000 miles on it. With a price tag of $6,900 on the signs adorning this seductive creature.

I was eyeballing it every time I passed by it. I still didn't really have an appreciation of what I was looking at. I admit it. And I started dreaming and thinking. And suddenly on Thursday, I saw the sign now read $5,900.

On a rare moment of impulsiveness, I called the guy, he says his father no longer requires it, as he is ill. I agree to meet him at 10am Friday the 24th. I shockingly make an appointment at the DMV for 10:50 AM on Friday the 24th.

I wake up in a wonderful mood, and I visit the man. We drive it around the block a few times, very basic, I admit I wouldn't know what to look for or listen for. But I'm eager to learn.

I tell him, I will go to the bank, and meet him at the DMV to transfer title, and to pay the man his money. And I did it. And I haven't not smiled since. And I now for the first time, understand what you folks have been talking about.

My coworker takes all his cars to a local guy. The praise of the man is unending. I'll take the word of a 60 year old Marine who has been around the block any day.

Basically, he's gonna be my guy unless he gives me a reason for him not to be. Gonna take it in tomorrow, and say, hey, what are we looking at? The only apparent flaw is the upholstery on the hardtop is loose by the passenger window. I've visited the Marine's upholstery guy, and will have him fix it or replace it this week. I plan to buy a fresh set of tires, and would be open to recommendations.

I also hope to buy a stand of some sort for the hard top. I admit I haven't taken it off yet, and am waiting for that perfect moment to be inspired. I've read the manual, read countless threads here and other places, and hope to learn. I am now a believer. And it has been a mere two days.

I will attach pictures once i get them onto my computer. I'm in Southern California. The Marine has already offered to buy it based on his inspection should I be displeased about my purchase. I doubt I will be displeased. I expect to put money into it, I guess we'll see shortly how much. Her name is Samantha.

Oh, I just opened up the armrest compartment and found the maintenance booklet. The car has full maintenance service completed at the appropriate intervals. The last one was 12-13-10 at 101,000 miles. Since then it has gone about 7k miles, and the next service due is at 112,500 Lubrication Service. With a smog certificate from a few months ago that passed.

Mike's Foreign Sports, Inc. in Thousand Oaks has done all the service since 67,000 miles in July, 2006. Would it be wise to contact them and talk about the car, and if so, how would one do that? Should I just go to the MB Valencia Dealer, and say do the next service, or go to the guy that came highly recommended locally, or both? Thanks for listening, but I can't stop talking about this vehicle.
