You guys were right about the W140! I finally admit it after all this time. I marched right out on Monday and traded my ’93 Black/Gray 300SE SWB W140. [:(] Thanks for making me see the light.

Oh, Btw, traded for a spotless ’97 S320 SWB W140.

how about just the engine and electronics? you can keep the body...and use it for a refrigerator. it'll fit in with the other kitchen appliances...i assume the door sucks shut like anyother refrigerator?

If the rest of the car wasn't in such nice shape I'd say Sure! I bet the 100's of lbs of insulation would keep my beer nice and cold!

Benzonline, your time will come. Just put 190E in the shop, and "tried on" MANY 560 SEL W126's. ROOMY! Nice. Only time I wished for long wheel base. On the daily though, I prefer the short. Rock on W126'ers. Even you two highly respected W140 haters above[:p]

Are there any real mechanical differences between the 1993 and 1997 W140s?

not positive, but i believe the 93 were 4 valvers, compared to 97 being 3 valves? or was that change more recent?

Main difference between post 95 and pre w140's is that the post 95's have 5-spd electronic transmission.

They were also facelfited slightly - smoother bumpers and side mouldings, color coded to car.

Simpler to use climate control system introduced.

Parktronic system was also updated.

Engine control computers were updated too.

All in all, the best w140's to buy are post 95's - fewer problems and better management systems.

But 6-cyl's still way underpowered for such a huge car - 8 and 12 cyl's the best bet's.

I am pretty sure all W140's were 4 valves per cylinder DOHC per bank too. I believe the 3-valve tech came into play for the w220's.

MAN[V] I'm sadden to hear THAT coming from such esteemed likes of YOU, sir! (I really am actually a true live fan of yours, and your magazine articles really ARE laying at the foot of my bed.) I'm on my second inline 6 and it is MORE than robust and extremely smooth. I PREFER the 6. Most folk I know who say that on this board have never even driven a 6 cyl W140, just IMAGINE that it must be underpowered. Now, YOU, I KNOW have 100% expertise in what you are talking about. Still, in this matter, you've made an OPINION call, and I most respectfully disagree.

All hail your SEC's![:I]

Opps, correction! I'm on my 3rd inline 6! My 190E has the 2.6. Ironically, IT feels slow and underpowered[?] Go figure. HA!

I've driven the 6-cylinder W140 SWB. She's got plenty of pep to get you in and out of trouble. Thanks to the short gearing, high redline, and flat torque curve.

ALL W140 S-Class had 4-valve per cylinder technology. Plus, the 320 and 420 were slightly more powerful than the E-Class variants. The S320 gets about 230 hp and the S420 gets about 286 hp. As opposed to 217 and 275 for the E-Class.
