Hey, folks. Why this has never been posted here I'm not sure (probably that lazy former mod), but here's a series of posts (to get around forum limits) of Mercedes Benz Diagnostic Trouble Codes for MY 1996+. I've also attached a pdf of the full list to this first post.

So get your HF code reader and get to work! :)

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Yes the world is full of information and like you say at the end it is your choice.

In any event, because the the data on on CAN line "C" is used by many modules. In Carsoft I would scan the Traction/ESP and also the ABS/ASR/ETS modules to get closer to the fault.

Regarding the missing or stalling, I would scan all the engine/injection and transmission modules. The short coming of carsoft is the inability to read what I call the temporary faults and freeze frame data associated with the fault, therefore, yes you could have a CPS faulting occasionally but not continuously to set a "hard" fault and without FFD you will never know what caused the fault--------big difference between 80 bucks and 12000 bucks-----Good luck
A.

an o2 sensor can become lazy well before it ever throws a code.
B. Differing opinions are fine but when you come up with crap like a cps won't cause a stall and absent a cps fault it is not the cps is not an opinion and it is just plain more piss poor information passed out from someone that needs to refer to his wis in order to take a daily drive..
90% of the time an unresolved stalling issue cruising up to a light or failure to start warmed up while starting when cooled will show no check engine light and will be solved by r/r the cps.
Almost all other non resolved stalling issues will show a code that will lead to a solution if you know which way to travel in the diagnostics.
If I were you I would learn how to flush your brake fluid, then progress to learning how the other systems that puzzle you really work, absent of a code:thumbsup:

Yes the world if full of information:rolleyes:

Of all the posters reporting a stall that was subsequently fixed by replacing the CPS, I don't remember anyone ever reporting an error code or CEL reported. And that includes cars scanned by SDS.

PS. I just remembered that 1 person did report a CPS code. However, his car had not stalled, but had some starting problems.

Hi All,

My newly ordered CPS will be arriving next week, I'll change it as soon as I can.

By the way I scanned the code again tonight after clearing all the error in the memory, somehow the Carsoft is returning a message saying the "Traction/EPS" module is not build in, please see the attached. I don't remember scanning "Traction/ESP" before, my record showed none, and the "Complete Diagnosis" command does not include it either. Is this normal? or may be Carsoft simply could not get to it?

Thanks,
Slliang

I think ABS/ASR fulfills that function on your car. The modules used varied over time on the W210.

Hi All, I replaced the CPS today, and drive around a little bit, so far so good.

I also replaced fuel filter before the CPS, first start slightly longer, but after it is same as before.

The engine seems run smoother than before. The idle RPM at stop seems to be slightly lower than before (from previous 700 to 600).

The old CPS has some oil on it, must comes from inside of the engine since outside is very clean. Is this a problem?

There are some debris around the CPS hole (probably even inside the hole) since it is very hard to clean it (can not really see it when put the hand in). Some must get inside of the engine when I pushed the new CPS in. Is this a concern?

I also cleaned the MAF, and the toner ring on all 4 wheels.

I'll post back in a week or so when I'll be driving to work for a couple of times.

You can clean

the area around the cps with a liberal spray of crc maf cleaner and let it evaporate before starting the car.
Did you index the cps upon install?

Hi Ohlord,

That make sense, but I didn't do it. The cleaning step seems not in any of the DIY sticky and threads.

What do you mean by "index the cps"?

Slliang
CRC maf cleaner

and a can of spray air( if you don't have an air compressor ) always comes in handy. Good to use in the spark plug recesses before plug changes too.

cps also need to be indexed if you ever change your rear diff.

You could ignore it or unhook the harness try to start the car, rehook the cps harness and follow the indexing procedure. Most ignore it. Those that know about it just do it;)

And those that think a failing cps and your symptoms are impossible without an obd2 code are simply oblivious or ignorant of how the system works and would not index anything they are clueless about in the first place;)

Keep us posted with how the driving situation proceeds.
The drop in rpm to 600 is just about spec.

Will do.

Sounds like the ECU will adapt itself eventually, so I don't have to worry about not indexing.
Hi All,

I think my stalling problem has been solved by replacing the CPS. I bought CPS from AutohausAZ per Ohlord. So far I have driven about 200 miles most of them on freeway, everything is fine.

I have done a few other things during the course, like brake light switch change, fuel filter change, toner ring cleaning, MAF sensor cleaning, but I believe CPS was the root cause.

I am quoting my original post below so in case someone have similar problem can find quickly some references.

Thanks everyone for the help.

My 1999 E320 has 120,000 miles now, mostly driving in Bay Area on Freeways. The problem started after I came back from a ski trip to Lake Tahoe. I washed the car from the top to bottom, and drove OK for a couple of days.

Then one day in the morning I felt a little bit unsmooth while braking. After I dropped my car pool partner going to my building going up a small bumpy ramp with a right turn, I feld ABS was acting.

The same day in the evening after work, while driving about 30 miles on a local road (don't remember whether I braked), the car lost power, and there is no reaction while I press the accelerator, and at the same time several lights came up, BAS, ASP with "!" etc., but I don't remember exactly the others since I was in panic. I turned off engine, and tried restart, the engine came on OK, and we were able to drive home 20 miles on Freeway, scary?!

The problem seems intermittent. It happened to me at least three other times. One of them being while turning left through a really bump transition, the engine turned off, and lost power steering. In at least two occassions while I try to start the engine, it cranks but engine does not start. It would start if I wait a little longer, 30 second or so for example. When it drives normally, there is no lights in the dash board.

The car has fairly new battery (one year old), and an oil change by myself (last summer). The warranty expired when it reached 100,000 miles. I only drive about 6000 mile a year because of car pooling.

Hey Pluto, are you going to swallow your comments about the CPS not causing stalls?? And that it will always set the CEL?:p:p

Thanks.

Mocha!! How ya been? Slumming from the big dog forum, huh? :D :D

Anyway, I've never heard of that as regards your question. When you get the P0100 or P0101 code that usually is the MAF (or the connection to it). The tricky ones are the FT codes, at least as regards the MAF. ;)

Good luck.
Thanks Greg.

Just lurking around in your neck of the woods.

I was asked by a friend who has CEL on. I scanned it and P0101 came out of it.
Cleaned up the MAF with MAF cleaner as some have tried with success but code came back after running it for about an hour. I was tempted to plug the MAF from my C230 to his E320 because they have the same part number but I didn't want the issue to transfer to mine :D

Anyway, I told him to get a new MAF from autohausaz. We'll see if that's the fix for it. I'll report back.

Interpret codes

Our ASR/BAS/ABS lights have been coming on randomly for some time, but more recently every day. The pattern is that they do not come on at first start in morning, but usually after first or second stop of a trip. Leave car overnight, they go away and then pattern repeats....

I had car scanned by an Indy who appears to have been using Carsoft or something similar. This is what he reported (I left it as-is instead of trying to break into sentences ;) )

ELECTRONICS P1747 B CAN FAULT FROM I1C ASR ACCELER SLIP REGULATING C1401 HIGH PRESS RET PUMP. ELECTR TRANS CONTR 135 OCCASIONAL COMMUNICATION WITH ENG MANAGEMENT. 136 WITH INSTR CLUSTER BRAKE ASSIST C1025 CAN SIGNAL ABS NOT AVAILABLE C1332 CELENOID VALVE BAS.HAS FAULTS IN ALL SYSTEMS. CLEAN &REPAIRCOMPUTER PLUGS & PERFORM ADAPTION. CLEAR & TEST DRIVE. RECHECK CODES. NO CODES.

P1747 code I knew about and reason had been corrected.
(I had removed the fuses (4 & 7) and had put one back in an empty slot by mistake. Caused cluster display to be blank. Put fuse back in correct spot. So anything to do with P1747 and instr cluster is probably irrelevant.)

I found C1025 and C1401 in original posts of this thread, but not C1332.

The Indy charged me $275 and did not pin-point the problem :(

Any suggestions?

PS: Already changed brake light switch. Checked voltage and it is 13.1-13.3 on climate display with or without BAS/ASR/ABR errors.

First Time Rookie

Hello guys and gals alike; first time poster AND first time Benz owner as of one week ago. :)
1997 E420 with 180,000 miles on it. I love it already.

I bought it with the check engine light on and its throwing me a (P0105 Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit Malfunction) code.

I was told the O2 sensors have been changed out and upon looking underneath it appears to be so as there are built in wire catches to tuck the wires away and whoever changed them never bothered to do that but that's ok so that would mean that yes; they have been changed. Let's assume so.

Upon startup (thats the worst time) and when you rev the engine there is a semi-throathy gurgling exhaust like sound coming directly from underneath the engine\exhaust header area. It does diminish a bit when the vehicle is warmed up but it's still there but only heard when you step on it or parked and revving the engine.

There's also a raw (pre cat) exhaust smell associated with all this and the smell drafts up into the cabin, prompting the activation of the recirc system or the charcoal filters.

Any ideas? Local exhaust place told me my exhaust system is "fine". I don't believe it.

CS came up with a code of "B1241 Refrigerant Fill" when testing the D2B system (Audio etc).

This of course makes NO sense.

But Mr. Google (and this thread) came up with possible answer. There is a code N1241 which says there is a problem with the CD changer. Seems more plausible!
Hi, first post here. I received my 97 e320 recently thru my grandmother and it has been sitting 7 years. I have learned how to retrieve and reset the codes.

I continue to get B1235 Emissions sensor (B31). I do not have a scanner as of yet but would like to fix the issue. Can someone help point the way?
some srs fault codes

very fine list of codes posted. thanx for great job, check codes. i found some more, you can put on list.
