Hi this is my first benz as well as German manufacturer only owned gm and dodge mainly trucks. i just got a 2007 S550 has 120k miles. Got it for a great price as well its not perfect but its clean. Now i gotta figure out what everything does and what it has/doesn't have. I see it has a memory card slot in the manual haven't looked at mine. but all i have is regular style SD plus my adapter hub has it already to talk to the pc. Maybe someone can tell me what to get. Don't mind getting a Bluetooth transmitter but those are junk.

It drives ok but the trans on the way home seems sluggish then when it does it throws you back in the seat while on cruise. It did have a cel but didn't effect driveability. Also has a clunk in the front end going over bumps while turning. But driving its perfect.

Reason i got it was always loved luxury brands after my grandma bought her 2010 cadi dts base model years ago. But out of all the cars i looked at in my price didn't find much or the mileage was outside of my limit

Just googled the other code listed and that explains the trans issue, question is what im i looking at to fix? Im hoping its a little low on fluid and it's still user serviceable. No lights on the dash except for tpms sensor.

It goes into gear just fine and drives ok even got it to chirp the tires

You're going to need a better scanner for Mercedes specific stuff. If you are planning on having a shop do the work on this car, you can get by with an MBII. If you're going to do the work yourself, pick up a dedicated laptop with Xentry/DAS.

For the P2422, remove the evap canister and inspect. It's behind the right rear tire under the wheel well molding. It could be shot or just dirty. You can usually tell its condition by looking at it. Clean it, blow air through it and put it back. You may get lucky. If any plastic falls off when you're removing it, time to replace it.

For the P0970, plan on a transmission fluid and filter at minimum. FCP Euro sells a nice kit. Look up a youtube video on it and see if you really want to tackle this. It's much more involved than most cars. You're going to need the tools to fill from the bottom. Check for any transmission fluid leaks anywhere else in the system. Now is the time to fix them since you can't top up the fluid. An indy shop will charge $400-$500 to do a fluid and filter change.

Thank you im smart with mechanics but probably gonna take it to a shop to fix correctly.
for the evap, probably going to let it slide and clear till it becomes an issue. The cadi dts has had the same problem for a long time now but it has a pin hole leak.

The trans im hoping its simple and cheap i know that shouldn't be used in the same sentence but my budget doesn't allow major repairs already planning on having to buy 2 rear tires they are well worn. Was sold as is but didn't catch the trans issue until later i figured it was programming related.

Last time i had a rebuilt trans was a 47re (4speed auto) and it was $2,000 and had aftermarket parts to handle slightly more power. For reference.

I bought the car from a decent small lot not a major name dealership. Hopefully they can help with the transmission issue. As it wasn't caught during the test drive just around the block with light throttle input just so i can get a feel for it. And wasn't informed about anything major with it.

Also thanks to small town life nobody around here works on them not even air up a tire.
Congrats! You're now a Mercedes mechanic. You're definitely going to want to pick up a diagnostics computer. You may have to travel for a while to find an Indy who can align your car but the rest can probably be done in a garage.

That cap can be found in a lot of places. Part number is 221-869-00-72

Thank you with all the little things i love this car and it has features i didn't know it existed like the dual climate control (all the ones i had only allowed temp even the cadi) and ability to control the passenger seat from the driver
Took it to the the only tire shop which is discount tire yesterday they put nitto g2 on the back and a all season up front the guy that did it has a challenger scat pack and that's what he recommends (have to go back hopefully soon as they decided it was a great idea to run 245/45/20 old was 245/40/20) also had them replace the tpms sensors all 4 were dead. Hopefully that fixes the light

Transmission is definitely speed related 40-55mph did a test last night from a stop with light throttle without letting off hit 70mph like normal did get it up to 105mph from 70mph passing, its so smooth its scary unlike the cadi dts (above 95 she gets light in the nose)

For the price i paid sub 10k i can't be happier she needs some tlc and has minor body blemishes. when i take it in to get serviced gonna have them look it over and tell me what needs to be fixed (that's not going to be cheap) hopefully its not a huge amount I'm fine with sub 5k for repairs to make it perfec. I don't think I'll hit that mark.

The dealership closest to me (almost a 2hr drive) to look at the transmission its free charge then any additional testing is $275 an hr. if im correct it's a sensor not sure what dealership charge but the auto parts store has it for $100 plus fluid and labor should be close to $300? If they charge the same for part?

Also another thing from reading it requires premium fuel (haven't made it far in the manual) can i run 89 octane?
i know we do it to the cadi dts it calls for 91 octane but we use 89 in it with no performance loss that i can tell. But that car isn't driven hard.

Congrats on the Mercedes! It looks like it needs a little maintenance. If you are going to do a lot of work yourself, you will need a shop manual. Download the 7,000-page pdf manual for $32.99 at: 2007 MERCEDES S-Class W221 Service and Repair Manual

Also, get a good MB scanner to get into the 59 computer modules to troubleshoot issues. You can find it here. See: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0791CDHS1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You can find a lot of parts on Amazon and FCP Euro. See: Genuine and OEM Replacement Car Parts Online | BMW Volvo Audi VW Mercedes Porsche Saab | FCP Euro

Also, see this post about the evap valve. Most likely the air filter to the valve on top of the charcoal canister is completely clogged. It is easy to get to and is behind the right passenger side rear wheel inner fender liner. See: W221 P0455,P0497 check engine codes

If you change the diameter of the tires, you're going to mess with the calculations of the speed sensors. It could set off a code or make your speedo inaccurate depending on how the diameters changed.

The dealer is going to scan it for $275/hr. If that pan comes off, you're not getting out of there for less than $1k. It's very rare to find a Mercedes dealer that can do work on cars this old that makes financial sense. Once the warranty expires, it's time to track down an independent Mercedes mechanic or shop.

You could run lower octane fuel but it's a risk. When you lay into it, the engine needs that octane fuel in the cylinders to prevent knocking. Knocking causes engine damage. Engine damage will TOTAL your car.

Thank y'all she needs a good bath (project for when it gets warmer in the 70s (Texas location), probably going to end up buying the scan tool at some point to make it easy to figure out stuff and go from there because then i can take it to the shop and tell them what is wrong instead of them looking for whats wrong, i can do light maintenance work depending on tools required i sold all of my tools years ago (decided diesel tech wasn't really for me like I thought). i made some calls and the dealership wants $160 for oil and filter and does a muti point inspection. The other shop in the same area quoted me $220-$240. The Cadillac dts i believe and uses the same oil for reference is $100.

The tires im not sure if the previous owner recalibrated it? Not sure but would that cause the trans issue im experiencing? Its not awd but then again i never changed rim size only tire width.

That's good to know about the required fuel, i knew octane played a big role, but wasn't sure if i could get away with 89 i know my 2011 ram 1500 hemi was that way but then i got a custom 93 octane tune.

Now waiting on discount tire to put the smaller front tires on.

Just looked at the link for the scan tool and its not a bad price at all i expected it to be more than that. Granted i paid 12.86 for my Bluetooth reader.

Also how does Mercedes do the manufacturer date. It says 10/05 on the door, if i go off my math it makes it an 06 but the vin pulls up an 07 year. Had the insurance company check it when i was talking to them today.

Not really but we decided to replace the front when we did the rear. The 20s with low profile side wall is growing on me as well
Rear has nitto g2 and the fronts are Westlake all season

The tpms sensors they used are aftermarket. Ordering me some oem. Not sure what tool they are using to do the re learn also not sure if oem will fix it.

Also found out this car can spin them with ease turned off traction control applied less then half throttle while turning and ya that is staying on

I'm reading with interest as I just bought a 2011 S550 with distronics plus on Jan 26th 2023 and I have to say I'm already in love with the car.

Did you spin the tires in eco/comfort mode or sport? LOL

Very nice!

Remember, if the trans feels a bit like an old man, you can always do the transmission reset. Once done pick a really nice road to get you more aggressive ride on. The computer will record your first 40 shifts and set the transmission accordingly.

Normally first step check harness & replace charcoal canister shutoff valve however, IMHO given time elapsed & mileage I recommend replacing canister with current part # 221470065993.
P0970
Generic code as mentioned have some with Xentry (MB diagnostics) erase stored codes & pull current providing necessary details.

Provide VIN I’ll post your MB data card listing factory delivery/production date, paint & equipment codes, etc.
