Hi everyone,

I'm new over here as I am buying my first classic Mercedes today! (so firggin excited!) Found a great example of a 87 560SL with 77k miles, Black over Palomino. Seriously looked at 30+ cars before finding the little old lady in Boca Raton's car!

Two first things on my list, replace those chrome rims with the nutzo sized star with stock wheels and to remove the painted on pinstripe..

My dilemma...Does anyone know how to remove a painted on pinstripe? Is it possible?!

I'm attaching the only pic I shot of it with my iphone. Will have way more tomorrow.

Thanks for your comments!

Welcome to the forum. Looks like a very nice 560. No idea how to remove painted on pin stripes.

You're not going to be able to remove a painted on pinstripe without a respray. If it's over the clear coat, you'll damage the clear removing it, and if it's under you'll damage the base AND clear. IF you can find someone good at striping, you might be able to change the color of the stripe so it isn't noticable or matches the base.

Ugh, that's not good... :( I hate the pinstripe as it is gold and red! Maybe they can make it silver at least.

Hi. I have an identical car to yours with a few less miles. Are you sure the stripe is painted on? They all came with tape stripes that are easily removed. Also, your car should not have clear coat if it is original paint. Paint code 040. Single stage from factory.

I didn't think about the black pearl color. Was that available in 87? Is it clear coated? I wish mine was as it scratches just looking at it.

His looks like 040 black. Yes the black pearl is clear coat. Just stating my pin stripes are painted on. Burgandy and bluish grey. I have a burgandy interior.

Nice looking car. Take it to a reputable paint shop. I'm no expert, but I have seen painted stripe work removed.

Wondered about that cause I always heard they were dealer. It does appear that the striping on mine is under the clear coat so that makes sense. Maybe they changed for the US market and did them at the factory.

I know the chome wheels were dealer or aftermarket.

All pinstripes were put on at the dealer. Original paint is single stage. Pinstripes will need to be carefully wet sanded off.

I have been wrong so many times lately. I was thinking of Metallic paint not clear coat.
The Black Pearl is a metallic paint. I do know my pin stripes are painted on.

Run blockers such as these can be used to carefully take off the stripe if it's on TOP. The stripe is likely a lower grade enamel paint, unlike the cured urethane on the car. If it's on top, and there's no clear, you're in for a polishing job, hoping that there's enough paint left to polish.
If there IS clear and you break through it to the base, you'll need to blend in base and re-clear the panel.

I had my local body guy wet sand the painted on pinstripes off my 300CD. The results were fantastic.
