I'm going to look at a 1988 300SE tomorrow. Looks to be in very good shape, 177,000 kms (110,000 miles) on the clock, seller notes all options work except the power passenger mirror (not a big deal). Comes certified. Is there anything in particular I should watch out for, or pay particular attention to? Is this model reliable or a money pit?

Any opinions, thoughts, etc. are most appreciated!

Thanks for the comments. The owner says it has new brakes all around, new muffler, new wheel bearings and the motor mounts have been replaced. He says it does not leak oil and has not had a problem with the head gasket. Going to look at it tonight.

If its close to Toronto area i can come with you to check it out. I'm just a little bit obsessed with m103s and 722.3's so it might come in handy.

Oh yes, he mentioned there was rust under the rear window. Sounded like he was perplexed how it started there of all places. Said he got it repaired and the entire car was re-painted a few years ago when he accidentally scratched the entire length of the passenger front door. Will check the antenna, heating and a/c. Will check the sunroof as well, but not concerned if it stops working (as long as it doesn't leak). Thanks, Kristov.

Rust around the rear window is a concern. If you were to remove the rear glass, you'd find in most cases the 'lip' which holds the seal is much worse off than it looks. I'm pretty sure it starts as a failure of the seal. It leads to water in the trunk. If there is no water in the trunk, it can perhaps be salvaged (although it might cost you $$$). If there is water in the trunk, then run fast, unless it's very cheap and you want a beater.

Look for rear glass delamination as well.

There was no water in the trunk, dry as a bone. There is one small rust spot in the right corner under the rear window. The rest is fine. Unfortunately it does leak oil and I was not impressed with the suspension. Not only is it built like a tank, it drove like one as well. I was expecting a much smoother ride. I passed on it.

check for oil leaks! timing chain cover and valve cover. also if it smokes leave running for a good 15 minutes. if smoking does not go away. it needs a valve seal job. that's $600!
