Give in the steering

My car has some give in the steering (about 2 inches to the right, not so much to the left). The mechanic said the right wheel bearing was shot so we replaced that but it did no good. We should have consulted the infinite wisdom of The Forum. Has anybody had experience with this problem? What can we (low on funds) do to help it?

Hello!!

I would look closely at the steering idler on the passenger's side. They get very sloppy and a kit for them is relatively cheap.

The idler kit is easy to install.....with reservations.
At least on the 300TE model, the link bushing kit is the easy part, getting the big bolt out without removing the exhaust is impossible. Well, not that impossible. You can remove the nut, reposition the bolt and with judicious use of a hack-saw (and lots of sweat) cut the bolt off.
This exercise may not be required on RHD models.
When you install the new bolt (supplied with the kit) just put it in from below....no problem.
You may also want to look at any adjustments on the steering box. There should be a nut binding a small shaft sticking uop which can be tightened to reduce the play in the system.
