I am trying to figure out which type of calipers I have on my 1992 300SD. How would one go about determining this? I want to replace the brakes and need to buy all of the hardware associated with this task. Any ideas?

Girling calipers have a "G" in raised letters on the caliper itself. It may be a "G" encircled sort of like an @ sign. It is sort of like a logo.

ATE calipers have ATE on them.

I have not had a reason to examine mine on my 96 s500 yet (recently bought it). My Volvo had Girling on the front and ATE's on the rear - go figure - but that is how I know.

Bayhas,

Thanks also for the information. Not too many people have been able to tell me much about this subject except for two people here so far, so thanks again.

John

you are welcome, i ll be installing new sway bar bushings monday, so i ll have my wheels off, just out of curiosity, i ll look and see who made mine, i have the 2 pistons calipers (1st gen, small pads).

for the record, all of the 500 i ve SEEN (all years) have the 4 pistons calipers.

anyone willing to add their car, will help us come to a conclusion about if this is engine size/trim/vin/option/year related.

To my surprise, my S600 has Lucas calipers. Usually you see ATE or Girling on Mercedes...
i am assuming you have 4 pistons setup?

Lucas and Girling are the same company.

I know this is an old thread, but I found it looking to solve the same problem (a supplier asked me if I had Ate or Girling calipers).

Had I known the 'LUCAS' stamped to the side of the caliper that I could see through the wheel was the answer, I wouldn't have gone to the trouble of taking off the wheel only to find nothing else.

If the calipers say 'LUCAS' on them, you can answer your supplier that you have Girling calipers.
