I checked, 963 is just a regular compression engine.
I think they may have switched the engine after getting the car CA legal.
Beside the Try Y headers / down pipes etc., close to the fuse box it has the numbered dial for different engine settings.
I need to find the engine number with the compression ratio stamped on the engine block.
Can someone tell me where this cast number is located?
Thanks.

Gen II Euro SEC with Try Y's, FGS, and other goodies. According to the VIN # it's a 500.
Can someone tell me what the engine id means?
Thanks
Its just a reg engine according to WIS.

But I ran the VIN of the 500 Euro SEC (WDB 1260441A089427) we pulled the engine with 10:1 HV stamped on it. Running the VIN on the MB WIS, it comes back as regular 963, and the engine stamped 10:1 HV (Hoch Verdichtung = high compression) is definitely not the reg. 963 motor.
Not to confuse anyone, I have two 500, and a 560 complete drive trains.

The Gen II Euro SEC is a car I am considering to buy.
Cheers

This is really strange. :dunno:

The 117.963 engine is a Series 1 5.0L engine.

The '85 through '91 cars had the 117.965 5.0L engine.

The VIN #, 126.044, confirms that the car is a Series 2 5.0L SEC.

Maybe the 117.965 replaced the 117.963 later than 1985? Any of our non-North America members know for sure?

Not sure abt 963 vs 965, but the 245 HP version came to replace the 240 HP version in oktober 1985.

Now I'm even more confused.

The following 5.0L engines were available for the W126 cars:
117.961, Highest rated version at 177 KW, or 237 HP
117.963, Highest rated version at 170 KW, or 228 HP
117.965, Highest rated version at 195 KW, or 262 HP

There were other 5.0L engines available for the SL and SLC versions of the W107:
117.960, Highest rated version at 177 KW, or 237 HP
117.964, Highest rated version at 180 KW, or 241 HP

I'm using a conversion factor of 1 KW = 1.341 HP. Is there a difference in the HP calculation, SAE vs. DIN?

Here are all the versions of the M117.965 engine:
RUF: 180 KW @ 4,750 RPM, or 241 HP, compression 9:1
KAT (CH): 164 KW @ 4,700 RPM, or 220 HP, compression 9:1
NV: 170 KW @ 4,750 RPM, or 228 HP, compression 8:1
RUF: 195 KW @ 5,200 RPM, or 262 HP, compression 10:1
KAT: 185 KW @ 5,200 RPM, or 248 HP, compression 10:1

Sorry it took me this long to get back to the thread.
After we had pulled the before mentioned Euro 500SEC engine/tranny combo, I saw on the block the engine number followed by 10:1 HV.
Which means it is not the 963 version engine as stated in the VIN.
But I still can't remember where on the block it was stamped.

I am sure talbir or Jonathan would find this an easy question to answer.

The 500 US engine is at Jerry's house on an engine stand where I can turn the motor, and look for that elusive number.
It should be in the same spot, no matter which 117 engine it is?
At least I hope so.
Cheers

Look down between the back of the engine and the firewall. Engine number is stamped on the back of the engine on the top of the block (in front of the gearbox).

It looked similar to these tranny numbers, followed by 10:1 HV
