Are there any compatibility issues fitting a gen 1 '84 steering wheel to a gen 2 car, say a '87?

Cheers

hmmm...I sold my 84 one (it has a flat head allen screw actually) and the guy who bought it is wandering where the airbag is....he's got a 87 560sl and is telling me that my eBay ad was misleading.

So I guess my question is - missing airbag aside - whether it will bolt onto his car and work OK, as I did clearly state the year and model the car came from

My understanding is that the GenII '86 to '89 cars will not accept the 380 style hold down screw wheels due to the airbag contacts. Prior to '86 no US production cars had airbags.

The switch from retaining nut to hold down screw on the GenI cars coincides with the end of 450 production and introduction of the 380.

Was the one from the '84 the original MB or an after market with adapter?
If you advertised that it was an MB off a '84 model and did not say it would fit the 560 the buyer is SOL. My opinion.

Original MB, but eBay auto-filled the later models into the posting, dammit, although I was clear in my description that it came off an '84 car...and the pic was clear enough too

Actually, I've no problem refunding the guy, just don't want him to give me negative feedback, not that I'm too bothered by that either I suppose....

The adapters from the earlier model with the hex bolt fit the 560 column. The wood wheel with adapter I recent purchased came off a 560SL. It is installed on my '84 280SL. IMO the wheel can be made to fit a 560SL
The difference between the stock wheels on the two models is obvious. Buyer did not perform due diligence. (ie: he is an idiot)

hmmm...so it would fit, albeit with no airbag function?

Your "buyer as moron" is the correct general consensus. You can't be responsible for his lack of knowledge, it's not like you made something up. If he does give you negative feed back, you're response to it is shown with it. I wouldn't be overly concerned. I have found that I prefer Craigslist to Ebay by a mile. I go that route before I go to Ebay. 99% of the time the item sells on Craigslist.

OK, so is the consensus that this would fit, or would the contacts for the airbag get in the way? I guess putting a gen 1 steering wheel onto a 560sl is not something people try to do too often...

I thought so too......BUT

Build date of 11/79 would be 1980 MY production for MB.
I thought so too Rowdie, but Steve Guilford and the guys at the Mercedes Classic Center are adamant that my car is a 1979 model, because it's a 450SLC 5.0. All 1980 models were 500SLC cars, and had the four speed automatic.

It's a just a poor little homologation special that is lost between model years!!
