Hello!
I really hope someone can help me.

I have a rattle coming from somewhere in the centre console/dash which becomes slightly more pronounced if I open up any of the storage compartments. It gets slightly louder at higher speeds and continues while coasting in or out of gear. It gets worse when I turn the steering wheel clockwise but actually stops when I turn it anti-clockwise.. The noise sounds a bit like a dried leaf stuck in an air vent (which it isn't), I fear it maybe more of a mechanical problem!

could be ur suspension getting worn out...

full lock steering wheel to the right and left and listen for clunks..if so ur lower balljoints are f-ed up

Does the frequency of the noise vary with engine or road speed? If so, it could be something in the driveshaft. I had a loose piece of acoustic insulation rubbing the driveshaft. I could only hear it at low speeds, and only after everything had warmed up to operating temperature.

The earlier 202/SLKs had a rubber grommet insulating the gearshift from tranny vibration- accessed from under the car - here's a link to give you an idea

Checked my manual and the gearshift adj. pics look the same as the earlier models - the rattle can be quite elusive to locate and typically appears at 100k+ miles on the SLKs

I assume you have the auto? - worn out grommet will also cause the gearshift to have a small amount of 'slop'

I had the exact same problem as you and it was found that the handbrake cable was loosen and causing that noise

inspect the handbrake cable and readjust it
