Can someone please tell me where/ if there are lights under the gear selector plate. I see mine glowing ever so faintly at night. Is there a bulb?

I know how to get the panel off my window/sideview control area - what else is there to do?

Thanks,

On the early w126 (pre 09/85) the strip which reads 'P R N D 3 2' is an illuminated strip.

On late w126 models, there is a small 12v bulb which can be replaced.

But no bulb on the early ones. Only option is to replace the strip.

Talbir,

Thanks for that info. Do you know what the part is called or if it is available? Is a "new" strip going to be relatively bright or is it supposed to be dim?

I find my dash is on the dim side even with new bulbs and rheostat cranked up.

I would not replace the "strip" on an early car. it is actually a bundle of fibre optics that run off a bulb holder that also lights the switches in the console etc. Some people call it the "octopus" - you may have a failing bulb that has grown brown and dim. I would start there.
