Well I have a 97 S320 with 70,000miles its does around 24MPG in town and about 29-30MPG on the motor ways. Not sure about the 500 but its going to be less than this about 16-18MPG.....I cant afford the juice on a 500 when Petrol costs £.080pence per liter

My "well tuned" S420 gives an awesome 26-28 mpg on flat highway at constant 70mph. In the hilly town areas where I live, I get a pathetic 8 mpg.

The best mileage of my S500C was 496 miles in one tank before I filled up and the low fuel...

The best mileage of my S500C was 496 miles in one tank before I filled up and the low fuel light wasn't even on yet. And I put in 21 something gallons. 90% highway from IN to IL and back.

Fuel consumption

I have a 96 S500 LWB. In mixed town and country road driving I get 21 mpg - and thats with some spirited driving', I still get that on the motorway with some VERY spirited driving. I'd get more mpg if i didnt press on so much, but it didnt seem to really be that much better driving like a saint.

I guess if youre happy cruising get the S320, but I'm a lover of V8's and the MB sounds and handles better the faster you go.
