Peter,

there are actually 2 brand new Getrag 5-speed on the market in Germany - both of them at 10% of what you paid. One of them is offered by Mercedes in Stuttgart. Someone had you really bad with yours.

I feel with you.

only drag is that most all germans won't use paypal, which sucks becuase they want you to wire them money to some swift number that usually does not exist in US bank systems.

the cost of shipping, customs, and wait time is tough to deal with.

but for some things like that new 5 speed, it's sure worth just flying over and having a nice 4 day trip for free (compared to sourcing one here!)

from much bad experience with ebay.de sales, I've had about 30-40% success rate.

As long as you don't have to pay your : roadtax, petrol, insurance, etc... yourself. Otherwise G-ownership is not that economical [:D]

got my Tax for the Car, 172 Euro, not too bad..expected more, but will it change in May this year.

Anyway, gas prices are on 1,10 Euro ...wait a second...per Liter, not per gallon [:D][:D][:D][:D]

who is complaining...

When my Getrag 5 speed ate itself I was told by everyone they were as rare as hens teeth..I assume nobody wants a chewed up version, (my old one) for lets say...uhm..$5000.00 Canadian?? In Europe there must be deals by the "truck" load but ...here in Canaduh not too many eh! All I need now is for someone to buy my restored 1987 230 GE for about $40,000.00 Canadian.

Well, the Getrag GL275 on Ebay would be THE one you're looking for! It's got the starter on the left side, which is correct for the 230 GE, all other 460s has the starter on the right side. You could also find a used box from any five-speed MB 190E (W201) or W124, they've also got the Getrag GL275.

Mike, I can't figure why you have problems with German Ebayers. Most of the stuff I buy from Ebay is G-Wagen related and obviously comes from Germany. I pay with IBAN/BIC bank transfer in EUROS directly from my bank account in Spain at a cost of 0.3% with a minimum of € 1.00 which is what I have paid in all the transfers I have made. Never had a failure of the goods turning up.

This contrasts highly with the cost of trasferring cash from my sterling bank account in the UK which is £ 15 = $ 27 per transfer, regardless of amount.

Hail the EU single currency!
