Hi all

Well, I am in the need of some good help, guiding.

I am looking at a new SUV, love the look of the G-class, classic and cool at the same time:)

But, I have only driven it on shorter trips, 1hr test drive and so.....how is it on a long trip? Say a 7 hr drive?
I know the Range Rover is great, but it is not a G-class.:)

How is the G-class to live with? To big and heavy? Better of with a ML say some.....but, I am not sure. Hope some can help me out.

Cheers all

G-wagen is not easy to live with...if you don't know what to expect. It rides rough. It can get quite noisy on a windy day. Fuel economy is not its strong points. It is narrow on the inside. Ergonomics is not its strong points. Remember, it is a civilian model of a military truck. Comfort is not its priorities. Handling, acceleration, and braking are not great.

Otherwise, it is a great truck!! I love mine. Quality is superb. I am most impress with the leather...ordinary looking, but it is tough. After 60k miles, the leather still look like new! No creasing. No cracking. The interior materials are also nice...all places are soft to touch and scratch resistant. It is built like a tank or bank vault.

Having owned an 07 full size supercharged Range Rover and only test driven the new G550 the most, I'd have to say for comfort alone, the Rover wins for sure, the air ride is really quite forgiving but if you want to feel more in control or maybe call it more in tune with the handling and steering, then the new G wins.

However, the 2010 RR is going to have new dampers sort of like those in the Audi magnetic ride where they stiffen by a charge rather than height setting. Pretty cool but also more tech to fail. The RR has way more air bags for safety too, one just for the knees, then sides, plus window curtains whereas the G has only 4 total, front seats and a window curtain on either side.

2010 RR's are getting new engines too, almost 400 for base HSE and almost 500 for Supercharged model. I think the RR is quieter inside too at highway speed with it's more aero shape, not too hard against the cool G box, and the 3 layer windscreen and 2 layer side windows.

I liked my RRSC but I think I might like the G more for my needs at least.

They are different enough that it should be pretty simple if you just go test them back to back.

Ha! You've provided a lot of good info too over the years. In fact, who have you seen who has a spring lift on a G? I would expect you know where to find a thread or something on that.

Here's my story: I moved to Houston like five years ago. Before that, I had different cars, mostly off-road oriented, like Nissan Safari, Nissan Patrol, Toyota Land Cruiser 80, 100.. All tuned up to the maximum off- road performance. I loved them all, each was the best one ever at the time I had one.

In Houston, However, I decided that the ride quality should be my first priority, and my best choice was Lexus GX 470. It was a brand new model at that time, and I was the car that I thought was going to be perfect for me... Rather big inside, but not too much like LX470, great interior, super soft drive (adjustable), japanese style perfect body design... I got one fully loaded.. I loved everything about that car, but every time driving it, I felt like something was wrong, could not figure out what was it.. Until one day I came to pick my son from pre-school.. I saw 15 other GX's parked at the same spot, and then I realized that I just joined the "soccer mom club". Ever since, I could not drive that car any more.. Again, the car was great, lexus quality, there was nothing wrong with it technically, It just was not for me.

One day, I went to the grocery store to buy some yogurt, came back a few hours later in the Range Rover Sport supercharged.....

For the following three years, I was the happiest man on earth.. I put Overfinch body kit on it, put Asanti 22' wheels and other nice looking gadgets!! It was the car for me!! loved it. Never took it off the road, never needed to in Houston... With all the negative publicity about LR/RR, my RRS had just one problem - rear license plate lights fell out ones. That was it.. I never took it off-road though.

About a year ago, I started dreaming of a different car, about G. Read all I could find about it, good and bad... The best ever expression I got from my friend in Moscow who used to have G.. He said that there were two most happiest days in his live, the day he bought his G and the day he sold it!!! It had mostly to do with the Moscow realities, G is by far the most popular car among car thieves , they call it one week car, you buy it, enjoy for one week and then it's gone!!

Anyway, I got my G55 now, and it came strait after RRS. I can only say, I LOVE THAT CAR.. I never hated RRS, but hardly ever think of it anymore.

With my G, I am trying to find any excuse to go out and drive it, anywhere, just to hear the sound of the engine, and get this feeling of driving "THE TANK IN THE BUSINESS SUIT".. How long will this love last, I don't know, and less I care, I am enjoying it now...

My recommendation is to go with what you feel like right now, don't listen to all these technical compare charts, after all, they way you feel driving it, is what matters. If you don't like it later, you can always sell it.

Konstantin

Thanks

Thanks all for the reply´s and good info.

Well, what I feel now???Hmm, G-class felling:):)

Sakhalin76, how you find the G-class on a long trip? As good as the RRS?

The G looks just cool, it say:move it, here I AM!

But, the RR/RRS is a nice car to. I will go and hear if the dealer say ok for me to take it out for a long test, hope over night, so I can drive it for 5-6 hrs.

Thanks for helping

Cheers

IMHO, if you're not gonna take it off-road, then i would NOT get a G-wagen. You won't really appreciate a G until you take it off-road...because on-road, it ain't spectacular my any stretch of the imagination!

It all depends on the mood you have that day! One day I will rock and roll in my G going over 90mlh (whenever it's safe to do so, and no police around), another day I keep it under 80 because tired of wind noise. G is a strong character and you will have to approach it from that perspective.. RRS is just a comfortable car, with better stereo system and not that noisy, sometimes that is exactly what you want, sometimes it's boring and you hate it.

I would however rate RRS a bit higher for a long trip.. just for a long trip!

Hope this will help.!

Agree 100% RRS is not an offroader when stock. Moreover, I found out that my RR did not have rear LSD lock, it appeared that rear LSD comes standard for the Nothern sates and Canada only, was not an option in TX.. I never knew that untill I sold my car to my friend in Russia and he got stuck in the first snow trying to use all/any of the "off-road" gadgets my RRS was equipped with!

That's all I can say!

Hi and thanks for helping me out:)

Well, yes, the RRS is more a "car" than the G wagon, but the pure look of the G is great:cool:.....so, I guess I have to give up the great looooong trip comfort, over the cool look the G have.

The noise is one more thing..yes, more than I did guess it will be.
But, I just guess thats what makes the G so cool, it is made to be heavy, solid, look like a tank, and feel like one:cool:

Next wek I will take a G55 for a test drive, try it on the high way and se what its like, ,yes, hear it to..

I live on a ranch and have had a 03 G and an 08 full size RR. Actually comparing stock to stock, the RR worked better off road because the stock G tires are garbage however with good tires, both are extremely capable. If you want more offroad capability than what a RR can do, you need a vehicle which you do not mind tearing up. The Rover is way more comfortable and mine has been very reliable however the G looks cooler and in certain situations can be better with it's 3 lockers. I didn't mind the rough ride and noise in the G but shaking steering wheel at highway speeds drove me off after many attempts to fix. Do not buy a pre 2007 RR because it will self destruct however in recent years, the reliability has improved dramatically.

Well, it is not the offroad capability I am after, all suv will be good for me.

I am more after the look, ,rock solid if a crash, taking 3-4 adults and what we need for the weekend and go, without thinking of the road, hills or what ever comes.

Texige, did you get the shaking steering wheel fixed?

No. I replaced steering dampeners, tires, wheels, road force balance, tie rod ends ..... I also drove a new 08 at the dealer and while it was a lot better, the wheel still had more highway vibration than I cared for. It apparently doesn't bother some people. The G should be a vehicle that overall will last for 200,000+ miles. The new Rovers are finally great cars IMO but when the warranty runs out, run in case they return to their roots.
