Dear Members,

I have a friend who is having a C180 W202 and is facing a problem with the Fuel gauge as it does not read correct and most of the time it indicates empty and even the reserve lamp is lit when the tank is full. Once the tank has 40 Liters inside, it starts to indicate and work properly. The service center advised that it seems that the previous owner used to fill it with only 40 Liters and accordingly the upper part of the sensor became rusty and it needs to dismantle the fuel tank and change the sensor. Any clue how this can be solved in an easier way?

The fuel sensing units were replaced on my 2000 C230 by the dealer. He said that it's a common problem, as the units gum up over time.

I'm not sure if a fuel additive/cleaner would work, but it's worth a shot if the car is not under warranty.
