I use an old spark plug socket flipped over. It's probably a 24MM or so but I ain't gonna pay the money for a hex socket I'll use once every 10 years.

Those buggers can be TIGHT! I've used a 3 foot cheater sleeve in combination with an 18" breaker bar AND had to kick the crap out of it to loosen them.

Had a buddy of mine suggest using a torch to loosen it.:devil

DO NOT use a torch. Not only the strainer has an o-ring that will melt but right on top of the strainer there is a complicated circular baffle system made of plastic with fine holes. If you melt that you are buying a new tank ($700 or more).

No mention of the fact you would ignite the fumes in the tank creating an explosion?

Relax. It was meant, and taken, as a joke.

Don't joke about torches and gas tanks. Some people won't know.

Take a spark plug socket, stick a 6"+ extension into the spark plug side of the socket, attach that to a breaker bar. It's easy if you do it this way.
