I had some wine from the fuel pump, the noise came from under the rear seat on the driver side. I purchased a new pump on ebay,,,, replaced it,,, the car was a bit hesitant at start up but that is natural because pressure needs to be established. Shortly afterwards I noticed that I now had a groaning/ grumbling/ scraping sound instead.. Drove the car for maybe 15 minutes, turned it off, started it up again after a while, still a bit hesitant at start up.

Did I get a useless replacement pump ? Any other suggestions ?
thanks

The car is a W210 E55 AMG, same pump as on most if not all the other W210s

Have you already replaced the fuel filter? If so did you buy that on ebay as well? There is a lot of junk (and rebranded junk) on ebay, so it's possible you have a knockoff part. There are check valves and pressure regulators built-in, so it's important to source quality replacements, and unless you know your seller, it's hard to be assured of that.

But a grumbling fuel pump (or a whining one) is not normal.

The other potential issue is that the strainer screen in the tank may be partially clogged. That makes the pump work harder, so it may be worth cleaning that. It's a bit tricky since you have to drain the fuel, but it's not insurmountable particularly if you run it very, very low first. You don't have to replace the strainer, you can clean it, but you should replace the o-ring on it.

Good luck.

Thanks, I did replace the fuel filter rather recently, but bought from a trusted seller. The car has very low mileage, I suppose that can put it at risk for the strainer screen being clogged since fuel may have been left for long periods at a time.
