Hello good I have a problem with the gas gauge when it gets full pretty crazy. Where is the fuel level sensor, to dismantle it.
Thanks
The level sender is part of the pump. One of the little contact fingers probaly
broke off. Repairing it is not really an option. Getting a new pump is the best
way to fix this. If the fuel filter has never been done then you need a new one
with the updated fuel lines that run from the pump to the filter. The filter has
been redesigned several years ago and requires different lines.
If yours is a newer W163 then just the pump will fix it. However if there are
more than 60,000 miles or 100,000 kilometers on the fuel filter it is due
for a change, but updated lines will not be needed.

Sergi, Guys! I have the same problem with fuel gauge since the first day I bought my ML.
Because of more important thing I have to fix, I did not care much about the gauge.
It's time now. When I fill up the tank, gauge drops down and stays there showing Empty until the engine uses about quarter of tank. Than it works fine, but at the end can show empty and after I restart the engine it shows about quarter tank left. It drives me nuts, but compare to cost of the sender plus headache of removing the back seat and removing fuel pump-setting the day meter and watching the mileage is nothing.
Yesterday I was looking through ALLDATA pages and found this: look at the screenshot.
Did anybody try that? Resetting the fuel tank characteristics.

There are many possible issues that affect the fuel gauge readings. Have you tried resetting the connector in the driver's rear wheel well as mentioned in the posts below..? If after resetting the circuit the fuel gauge works perfectly fine for one or more refills, then your sender may not be the culprit. There are many posts on fuel gauge problems that Mercedes never fixed in all W163 models (1998-2005).

On my 2005 ML 500, the fuel gauge reading started having problems after only 3000 miles. In this case, an instrument cluster software option had to be disabled, but the reading is not steady and it oscillates a lot with that fix. On my former 2001 ML 320, I had 3 fuel pumps replaced and all of them got the fuel gauge reading problem sooner or later..

It's a wierd problem this fuel gauge.

Mine was inaccurate for a long time and after three to four removals and installs of the relevant fuse it's been comparatively accurate for over a year now......till the next episode(s).

If I don't fill up the tank - the reading is accurate enough. Even overhead computer shows accurate number what left until empty. However when it's about quarter left gauge can show empty until next restart than goes back to quarter. I got used to live with that and daily trip reset button is my best friend. I try not to fill up and gauge never drops down.
I will try to replace the fuel pump when it warms up outside if nothing else to fix (I doubt it :) ) and anyway I feel like I need to replace the fuel filter which I think causing the truck to stall sometimes at the light.
Anyway, I love driving that baby and id doesn't get on my nerves to fix all possible malfunctions that we inherited from Germans.

I had this exact same problem on my 98 ML320 -- started happening sometime last year -- had it happen off and on for a few months, and then mysteriously the problem went away. No idea why.
