The fuel consumption for my car is around 500km/300 iles for a full tank which is 70Litre/18gallon. Is that normal or too much ?

When it was new, the 2.3-16 in Euro specifications, averaged 12L/100KM from its 70L tank.

In the Sydney metropolitan area, my 2.3-16 averages around 8km/l or approx 12l/100Km. On a run in the country areas staying around the posted speed limits, it will get quite comfortably to 12km/l or approx 8 l/100km.

I am in melbourne by the way. Mine is about 13-14L per 100km mostly stop-start traffic. So I guess its not too far off the mark.
Also there is some tapping noise in the engine, is that normal?

Thanks for the info guys

If you hear chain rattle before the oil pressure builds at startup, that's a symptom of the timing chain tensioner needing adjustment or replacement.

Tapping while running is like the valve lifters needing to be adjusted. The 16 valve (and pre-85 M102) uses shims, while most of the other W201's have hydraulic lifters.
