Last week I bought a 240D. So I have just used my first tank of fuel. I managed to get 31.5 MPG (That’s UK gallons – 4.55liters). This was with 160 miles being at motorway speeds of between 85 mph and 95mph, with the rest being around town and in traffic.
Is this as good as it gets?
Anything I should do to get better gas mileage?

If you are getting 31.5 mpg's, doing a lot of hyway driving at those speeds you are doing very well. Like always, if you slow down you will get even better fuel mileage.
Also your 240D is around 3300 lbs, not near the 4000 as Lorbenzo says. The larger 300 SD's were in the 3800-4000 lbs.

Actually it works out as 25 MPG in US gallons. We have 4.55 liters and you have 3.78. To be honest I am very heavy footed and struggle to keep my speed down.

The car tends to cruise at an inidcated 75-85 MPH and have had it up to 100mph, which is how fast the speedo goes. I was surprised it got that high considering the book speed is nearer 80mph. Is this abnormal?

A little off topic.

rrgrassi- your 300D weighs 4500 lbs. ? My 80 300D reg. papers says it weighs 1551 Kg. which is about 3415 lbs. What do your reg. papers say about weight. The 4500 lbs might be the gross vehicle weight ( GVW ) with passengers and luggage. 4500 lbs seems very high.
Can anyone else chime in on some weights of their veh's.

Just curious.

I have had mine up to an indicated 100mph and it felt like there was more. I have heard that that Euro versions had more power due to emmision reasons. I amnot fully aware however it seems to pull real well.

0-60 sucks though. :D

You sure there aren't 5 injectors under the hood then? Or perhaps your speedo is in Km/hr? Does it feel lke your JUST keeping up with traffic, blowing by everyone, or being passed as well? I'm wondering if your dash internals for your speedo are from a gasser or something odd like that? I know that the 240D and the 300D had way different rear ends over the years......

Everything is standard on the car. No oversized wheels to throw anything off. I am pretty sure it is the 4 banger with no turbo. At 100 mph it felt like 100mph and at 85mph i was slightly faster then traffic which again is about right.
