Hi Guys,

I've had my SLK200 about 6 weeks now and only done about 500 miles so far. So far, I have an average fuel consumption of 23.4mpg which seems pretty poor; I've not driven it too hard and suspect the fuel consumption will improve once the engine had bedded in properly.

I just wondered what sort of fuel consumption other owners have achieved after owning their cars a little longer. My uncle has a Porsche 997s and gets 21mpg which got me thinking mine isn't very good!

Comments appreciated. Thanks.

I have a 350 and since I got my car a year and a half ago and 6200 miles later, the car says I'm getting 16.8 miles per gallon with an average speed of 27 miles per hour. Abysmally poor I think, but I tend to go on short trips and tromp on the pedal quite a bit.

I had a SLK 200 for about 15 months. During that time I used to average about 30/32 mpg. That was just general driving, on long motorway runs it was much better.

I had a manual, I suspect that for the auto the figure will be slightly less.

Warning, mpg measurements in US versus UK are NOT comparable without conversion. UK uses imperial gallons which are larger than US gallons.

1 Imp Gal - 1.201 US Gal

So UK mpg looks 20% better that US mpg, when posted.

So the 23.4 mpg of the OP is equivalent to 19.mpg in US terms (if my math is correct).

I have the SLK 280 (3.0 liter engine) for about 18 days now and am getting 23 mpg based on the on board computer readout, but this is mostly driving on city streets with an average speed of 27 mph.

Fuel Consumption in my SLK 55

To date my car has 3010 miles, with an average of 15.53 mpg; ranges from as much as 21 mph on strict highway cruise with my wife in the car to as low as 11 mpg when letting my nephew drive it, with me in the passenger seat, as a treat for his returning from Iraq safely. At one point I had to ask him how fast he was going and he looked down and said: "120 mph". That is when I had to turn him toward home. [:0]

SLK 55 oil consumption: engine now reads 8.2 quarts after sitting overnight. It has always read 8.3 quarts until now. I always check it in the exact same level spot in my garage. That is 0.1 quart in 3000 miles. How is that for oil consumption?? Best, most fun car I have ever owned. [:)]

In warm temperatures, I get an average 7,8 litres/100 km (city/motorway). That is about 36 miles per Imperial gallon or 30 miles per American gallon. On a good motorway, if I drive reasonably (100-120kmh or 60-75mph) I can get 7,4 litres/100 km (about 38 miles per Imperial gallon or 31.5 miles per American gallon) which is an excellent fuel consumption considering the weight of the car and the type of engine. In colder temperatures, with winter tyres, my city/motorway average is 8,5 litres/100 km (about 33 miles per Imperial gallon or 27.5 miles per American gallon). City driving alone is much much more fuel-consuming. I get an average 11,5 litres/100 km (about 24.5 miles per Imperial gallon or 20.5 miles per American gallon). As a rule, I never use my car downtown. I always walk to work (half an hour walk twice a day).

Here are some causes of higher fuel consumption:

Excessive city driving
Bad tyre condition (or use of winter tyres)
Extreme speeding
Very cold temperatures
Running-in period

So far, I am quite satisfied with the performance of my SLK. [:D][:D][:D]

Like you I have a 200 and had varying mpg. Driving it down from Scotland after pick up I averaged 36 mpg in C mode never realy got above 60mph,if you know the road A67 you'll understand why. I find in c mode it's doing about 28 mpg all short runs and in s mode it drops to about 26/24 mpg, as I was only expecting to get 30ish I'm find that aceptable. If I can be of any further help just shout.

I have not yet compared my car's performance in the S mode since I have driven in the C mode during the running-in period and all through winter. I only started to drive in the S mode recently. So far, I have seen little difference as far as fuel consumption is concerned. As I said before, the way you drive and some other conditions have some influence on your car's performance. More so than the S/C mode setting I believe.

My SLK200 has averaged 15.4 mpg. And that with an average speed of 10.5 mph. Of course, this is because the car rarely has been driven outside of downtown Bangkok. Here is a photo of my metric dashboard. These figures were correct as of a couple of months ago, but I don't think the average has changed that much since then.

The most interesting figure on your dashboard is the 31,5ºC! I wish we had these kind of temperatures more often here! [;)]

But seriously, considering your extremely low average speed (17kmh), 15,2 litres/100km is very normal. During my running-in period, I was stuck in very slow traffic for almost one hour and my average fuel consumption was 18,5 litres/100km! These are Hummer figures!!! [xx(]

How is this for an even worse 10k! 11.7 mpg at an average speed of 5.6 mph. Downtown Bangkok during rush hour.

You broke my record!!! I hope you'll have a chance to try your car on a nice motorway soon. You'll see how great this car really is. I am no expert but I assume that constant slow driving isn't very "healthy" for any car, let alone a sporty car.

My 350 has now done 20,000 mls and the trip computer shows an average mpg of 25mls per UK gallon from new. I drive 30 mls into central London each day so I'm quite pleased with that.

For the past 4 days we have been celebrating Songkran here in Thailand. About 1/3 of Bangkok's residents went up country to visit family so the street have been relative free. I've even managed to hit 80kph on some roads.

Thanks for all your replys. I do think it's mainly down to the running in period and also the fact that so far I have only really driven on short trips around town. I'm not bothered what it is really, I just love driving the car!

Just done a 50 mile trip 20 motorway and the rest urban town, no traffic as it was early hours. I've averaged 38.6mpg and on the m/way I was sitting at 80ish, so thats OK, my wife usually uses this car for work etc and she only does 4 mile per day to work, so I cant expect high MPG. The best bet is to fill her up brim kneck, set the trip to zero and run it for a week, refill it to the brim, divide you miles by the amount of fuel used and find out how acurate you comp is. I also run a passat estate and I find the comp is not as acurate is it is telling you, mind you only by 2/3mpg. Also try using the cruise while on the m/w see if it helps, also a good tip for areas of cameras, as it's easy to let your concentration slip and be doing more than the limit.
Regards

I've done 1,600 miles since getting it 5 weeks ago and have averaged 27mpg.

75% of my driving is dual carriageway or A class road.

However, mpg can drop dramatically when you gun it. [:D]
I've recorded 21mpg on a journey which would normally return 28mpg.

I think nowadays filling it all the way up may not be a good idea. Some cars, and I'm not sure about our SLKs, have other tubes near the top which shouldn't really either have gas in them, or should just not be covered.

I don't remember why just now, but I think it has something to do with polution controls. Unless it is just a US thing.

I would fill it up at the same pump, but just wait for the automatic shutoff to go and repeat that.
