Hi - A couple of things:

1) I have a 1985 280CE, just wondering what sort of fule consumption (litres/100km) I should be expecting. On the highway it seems to be around 10litres/100km but around town it's quite different at around 16litres/100km. Is this what others are experiencing? Is there anyway of 'tweaking' to improve consumption?

2) Also wondering what peoples experience is with fuel. The 1985 is a super (leaded) model but you can run unleaded using the '1 tank in 4 use leaded' rule. Was wondering how people have faired using premium unleaded as opposed to standard unleaded.

Thanks, Nick

Hi Nick,
Nice car!
I think you should be OK with unleaded. Have a look at this URL http://www.old.com.au/ULP.html
It lists the Mercedes models suitable for ULP. I think you will find that as European cars had to deal with unleaded fuel sooner than us in Australia, they had hardened valve seats sooner. My 1984 Porsche 928S has hardened valve seats and is certified to run ULP. But based on my experience with the Porsche and a Peugeot 505 of 1985 vintage, i would strongly recommend PULP. They just go heaps better and you never have a problem with pinging under load.
You should get a diesel and not worry!

Regarding fuel consumption, your numbers are probably pretty much on the mark. My wife has a W124 300E, and around town we get approx 15 or 16 litres per 100k, but on a trip we get 10 or 11 per 100K.
Cheers,

Chris

Double thanks - for the compliment and info! I'll get my mechanic to check out the valve seats. After submitting my question I did more research and it seems my fuel consumption is actually quite good compared to what others are getting...

Not sure about the switch to deisel yet... is our local deisel up to scratch?

Nick
