Hi all,

My mercedes W168 - 166.990 - with automatic transmission stopped showing gear on the display. There is also no "F" - it is just blank. Same as on this video: Youtube W168 failure
It does not shift - it seems that the gear stuck on 2 and thats all.

When connecting it to diagnostik tool, the error code is P060: CAN: communication fault with FTC (Front transmission control) - permanent.

Is this repairable? Is the transmission unit broken? Do oyu have any ideas? Also where is the transmission control unit located so I can put it out?

Thank you!

Unlike some other faults, this one is not repairable because the chip is burnt out beyond redemption.
It might revive itself after the car cools down and reset, but the damage is irreversible.
This happens usually to lower mileage cars that are not driven often and have flat battery regularly.
Flat or damaged battery, small battery and jump leads are the enemy number one of control units, not just A class FTC but any other car.
Some people claim they car repair it, I know it's tempting but if you decide to go for it make it clear with them No Fix No Payment.
Error code P0600 must be ignored.

Sounds not cool.

It is a low mileage car, it is my gfs and she was driving it like once a week.

However I was quite sure that the unit is ko, but what about a already repaired unit from different car? I know that new one is way too much expensive. It cost more than the car itselves. Is such thing possible?

Do you know how can I get to the FTC unit? I was trying to locate it but without success. I would like to remove it from the car to see the sticker on it (unit number etc).

FYI, the forum index is grouped according to chassis designation, usually a letter followed by 3 digits, and sections cover all engine versions the chassis came with.

The forum sections archives have a wealth of DIY / technical information.
