I was just topping up my engine this morning as it was down nearly a quart and realized that I have added 4 quarts since the original oil change. I keep a record of oil added as I use blackstone oil analysis and they need to know oil added.
My FSS says I need to do a B service in 1100 miles so I assumed I had done 11900 miles working on a 13000 mile maximum for the FSS. when I checked the actual mileage done however i'm at 17000 since the last oil change.
I had always assumed the FSS was allowed to shorten the length of the service but was set to 13000 miles as a maximum for US markets, 18500 miles (30K km) for European markets.
mine is obviously not running at 13K miles as a max - just wondering where that number came from?
anyone know? I'll post the blackstone report when I change the oil but certainly at 13000 miles the last chage the oil was still in excellent condition.
cheers

Every time I add 1 quart of oil the FSS adds exactly 1000 miles to the next service due date. I had never heard of the 13000 maximum but I like that idea. I do know that the time interval is set for 365 days.

I did not know that. I suppose if there is a 13K max and I have added 4 quarts its close enough to 17K.
thanks musikmann - Ive learnt something new again:)

You're welcome gurunutkins. Another thing: If you drive fewer miles in 1 year than the FSS is measuring in miles until next service due, the message changes to days until next service due. I think mine started at about 20 days. That happened to me recently and I asked on here for an explanation. That's when I learned of the 365 day limit. I'm looking forward to seeing your Blackstone report.

Not sure of that either. On my 2002 E320 it is 730 days. My last service was at 727 days (3 days remaining) and just short of 18,000 miles.
I don't think there is an upper milage limit.

I don't know how Kobus got 2 years on his US FSS as I know that past 2000 models have 1 year only, while 99 models I did own did not have time at all (at least to my knowledge as I never went more than 18 months).
That said, the FSS on our ML320 was giving us about 13k intervals even when 2000 of those miles were hauling 5000 lb boat. The burned fuel would likely propelled E class for over 20,000 miles on the same engine.

I do a lot of mileage so I don't think time will pop up. I've done about 19400 miles in close to 6 months and the FSS tells me I have 900 left before the service. I will probably change at around 20k miles irrespective of the FSS and send it off to blackstone. I'll post the report when i get it back - should be interesting :D
cheers
