If it is not engine related, then I would do a thorough inspection of your front suspension components including ball joints and tie rod ends. The way to tell if it is engine related is if the noise increases with engine speed without changing vehicle speed. If it changes with vehicle speed and not engine speed that it is more than likely suspension related.

If it were air-conditioning related the noise would increase in frequency as the engine RPM increased. A simple way to determine this is sit in the driveway in park with the air conditioner on and listen for the sound and increase your RPM with the gas pedal and listen for the sound to speed up

Dealer found that it was a abc pump on the driver side that had the pressure was going on and off.
How about being able to tell if the trunk struts have been leaking. Right now the trunk lid will not stay up. Is there an adjustment that I could make or do they need to be replaced, Watched youtube video and it appears easy to replace.
If I need a replacement is there a cheaper place to buy parts than going to the dealer.

Thanks you have been a real help. A bummer on difference in pricing from dealer.
Going to have to learn to do some of the work myself.
I also have a 2014 ml63 Amg without the components to run the dvd system. The site does not have parts for it. Any suggestions?

Ebay has multiple sources for most things new or used; also check Amazon. With ebay, search r230 trunk strut 2003(or your year). It will also let you enter your vehicle make model and year.

The trunk struts, shocks, or cylinders hold the trunk open. It is easy to finder cheap replacements. You can also search by part number found on most parts. You can enter the part number or description into your browser URL address to do a "google" search.
