Hello!

I have a 1998 E320 wagon with abut 150,000 miles on it that has started running rough and making a noise at idle that sounds like the tapping of little hammers in the engine - tuneful enough that at first I though I was just sitting next to someone listening to music. This has now degenerated into a ghastly loose-sounding rattle.

Is this the sound of my engine dying, or something that can be relatively simply repaired by a semi-competent mechanic?

I've always been good about premium gas, oil is changed regularly, etc...

Fingers crossed!

You need to lurk more in the W210 forum. ;)

Hard to diagnose noises on a forum, but from that description it's possible you have a failing cat. That is a classic sound and it would account for the rough idle, too.

Thank you!

I will go and lurk/search along those lines and in the proper place - it is a very distinctive sound that one of my daughters described as "little gnomes hammering on the pipes with mallets."

I'd rather not say that to a mechanic, somehow...

It does sound like a cat has gone. You can tell if you lift the car and hit the cats with the palm of your hand and they rattle then they are finished.
