Fog light follies

Fog lights suddenly turned on while driving with the lamps switch in the off position. They flickered on and off causing the defective light warning to flash on the dash. Lights remained on past the standard 30 sec illumination after turning the ignition off...battery drain. I removed the controlling fuse # 9 near the steering wheel so the lights stay off.

Also the little red tow indicator light on the dash panel switch stays on.

Several weeks ago I had the right fog lamp assembly and wiring replaced.
I also reconnected a loose wire in the left fog lamp assembly. The lights worked perfectly for several weeks before all this happened. And it started after a big rainstorm but we've had many rain storms which were never a problem so I think the storms are coincidental. Wondering what is going on here?

You need to remove the foam pieces covering the PSE and check the bottom of the PSE for wetness. You may have to remove it to check the bottom and connectors. Water may have drained from the drain hole at the base metalwork, and whatever leftover dried up, But it may have done its damage to the connectors / printed circuit board for the Alarm module.

When the car is in alarm, The PSE/ATA flashes the fog lights. Also in the case of anti-tow LED, it is driven by the same module. You do not have alarm condition, if you did you could hear the alarm horn (if it still works) and the fog lights would flash. If the fog lights are on permanently, the circuit board in the PSE that drives it, is bad. The same goes for the LED.

Remove power connector to the PSE module and see if the lights turn off. Connector 2 with red/white and red/green wires, brown and black wire.

Also, when you say that the alarm works, do you mean that the siren works ? or together with the sirens, do you have the side/rear/fog lights flashing ?

You are batting 1,000. Checked the foam block and the bottom was wet. Removed it and dried the floor. The alarm siren and lights flash. Will put fog lights fuse back in when I get home this evening.
The parking and back lights are no longer on when the ignition is off but the tow light is lit steady red all the time.

You need to remove the PSE completely out of its location, and examine it on the desktop (connectors, printed circuit board etc.) . You need to get it completely dry, and then use electronics connector cleaner spray (CRC from WM), and let it dry. Re-install, and if you are lucky, it may work again. If not, you need a new PSE module.

Obviously the water is leaking into cavity under the rear seat. Very likely from the sunroof drain ducts. You need to address that, else the repaired / new PSE will fail again. In the meantime, install it in a thick plastic bag, so water will not seep into the bottom again.

For the moment the wacky light and trunk behavior has stopped. I reinserted the fog light fuse. They work properly and are not staying on after ignition is off. Tow light still steady red when driving. Perhaps PSE drying has helped. I will try to remove and clean it at some point this weekend

There is a sensor in the same area for the tow. Maybe it got wet too.
