Tonight I flushed the power steering and boy was it due replacement. The PSF was black, like in really darkish brown. Not good! I emptied and refilled about 8 times, using 2 liters of Fuchs oil. As a tool I used a 0.5 L. syringe connected to a plastic see through tube.
Used the DIY in here, so thanks for that. Real simple DIY and highly recommendable.
See this picture for reference of a really bad and old PSF, picture was from the first drain:

On to the dreaded squeeky steering issue. The squeeking sound has been there from the day I bought the car (almost a month ago) and I noticed the majority in here thinks it's the rubber grommet sitting in the fire wall department causing the sound. Some reports that it's O-rings or bushings in the steering column. I definately hope it is the first :p
But I have to confirm that we're talking about the same thing.. So here is a video of the sound in my car.. Most notible when the car is warmed up and one have been dring for a little while. It's harder to hear at speeds over 30mph as other noises drown it. It almost as if you can feel it in the steering wheel too.. Grinding it's way into my there-can-be-no-noises-in-my-premium-car-that's-not supposed-to-be-there ;)
You have to turn up the volume a bit.. Crappy video but you'll hear the groaning and whining!

I could hear the audio fine. That is worse than mine was but I can't tell if it's the same problem/fix. My dealer pulled the steering rack and replaced that o-ring or bushing and the fix was successful.

Cheers, yes it is quite loud. Car must be warmed up for the noise to be like that. It's freezing in the mornings thes day and thus it takes longer for the noise to be this loud.
But you say the dealer pulled the rack.. It is the grommet in the firewall where the steering rack goes through that are making the noise right? Can't it be accessed from under the dash somewhere and lubricated? I guess it's a big job to pull the rack, not DIY?

Since you mentioned it mine seemed worse when the weather was warm. No it was not the grommet in the firewall for me. My bad part was deep inside there and removing the rack is the only possible access. Lubricating the grommet is another possible fix. I don't know about you, but I would not want to pull the rack myself. Plus they aligned the front end after that job.

Thanks Musikmann..

No pulling the rack sounds like a real mechanichs job, + there's the alignment afterwards.. I'm leaning more and more towards this as it's slowly progressed towards a groaning or whining more than just a faint squeak which is what I felt like it was in the beginning ie maybe the lube job.
Do you recollect how long time it took when you got it fixed? Is there a WIS or DIY for doing the rack job floating around?
I think I will try the Lubrizol method first.. that and the lube job as per the DIY in here.

About the Anyone else saw my video and have an opinion?

Not precisely but about 4 hours. I think my appointment was for 8:00am and the guy was finished by lunchtime or 12:00pm.

Plus since it was covered by the CPO warranty I don't think I have a repair order listing the time spent and the parts cost. I'll double check that and post back if that lists any further details.

I read up on your other replies from other threads concerning this issue.. Useful stuff there. I ordered the Lubrizol and found the TSB from Mercedes so I'm gonna see if it will improve.. Don't have my hopes up too high though. If it stays unchanged I will talk my mate who is a mechanic and see if he could do it..

Strangest thing happened to me. I bent the aluminum panel when doing the cat assemblies, I had a strange squeak and was able to have a friend listen while I turned the steering wheel. It was from the engine compartment. I wiggled the steering wheel when I found an area where it squeaked. My buddy bent the aluminum panel back into place and the noise was gone. I was really stoked that it was not a seal on the hydraulic.

Is the sound coming from the cab or in the engine compartment. Listening to the video, it kinda sounds like it is coming from the inside. There was a sticky here on how to clean the steering wheel from the inside to get rid of the sound.

Hope you find it.

Good luck!
