Hi I just bought a 2001 320 SLK, the OM talks about MB fluids but does not list alternatives. Does anybody have a comprehensive list of acceptable alternative fluids for:
Oil
Tranny
Coolant
Windshield washer
Brakes
etc
Thanks in advance for any help you may have.

You can go to autohausaz.com, enter your car type, search for each fluid to find ones that meet your car's specs.

Or you can go to the W210 help/diy stickies and look in the general one, there is a link to the official list of approved fluids.

Good luck.

Oil - fully synthetic such as mobil 1. 0w40 or 5w40 is ideal, change every 10,000kms

Tranny - go to the dealer and get MB stuff. change every 60,000km

Coolant - best to play it safe here get the MB stuff (dealer). few guys have wrecked headgaskets because of incompatible coolant. mix 33% coolant to distilled water or 50/50 if in a very cold climate (below zero). change every 3 years

Windshield washer - plain water is fine. if in places where its freezing can get some attitive at auto parts stores which will stop it freezing.

Brakes - DOT 4 or Super DOT 4 fluid. only difference between the 2 is super DOT 4 has a higher boiling point. only required if you do mountain driving or applications where you dont want brakes to fade. normal day to day use DOT 4 is fine. change fluid every 2 years
