Hello Benz World Forum.
May I enquire wether anyone has had an issue with a Vito 108cdi that fluctuates or pulses in revs during idle and during take off through 2nd gear? Also around that rev count a rattle is evident going up through 1500-2000 revs and back down through same.
It is as if a bush bearing is worn and the shaft turning within it is eraticly bouncing from side to side,,,only at a less destructive level of volume and deeper in pitch. Almost like a water pump bearing but I have recently put its first waterpump replacement in six months ago. This is more under the middle of the engine not at the serpent belt end.
(A new alternator was fitted three years ago its not that.
I replaced the deisel pressure pump seals three years ago also and a oil and filter change a month ago,, just to update on recent mechanical history since ownership three years ago).
Thanks in advance.

Greetings from planet earth Space-Ship 3.
You have come to the right place.
We on the 3rd planet are knowledgeable in such Vito matters you have.
When was the clutch last done, if ever.
Like many 'modern' manual diesels, your Vito has a Dual-mass flywheel.
As this part wears, it starts to make jerky engagement/acceleration.
If ignored, failure can be messy.
Without more info I think this may be the likely cause.
Of course it could also be fuel related, or maybe a dodgy crank angle sensor or something like that. But usually the sensors either work or they don't.
Look at your fuel lines at the filter if they are not too brown and opaque. Look for bubbles.
Does it rev out OK or does it struggle to get to redline?
When idling, is there any unusual boing, boing, boing or pss, pss, pss sound? This may be the DMF telling you it's booked into a retirement village and it's giving you 2 weeks notice! ?
Let us know how you go and what it ends up being.
Cheers.

Thank you DeVito. It is Space-Ship 3 replying!!!
So, elliminating the presumptions: I've had a clutch slip in a previous Nissan and of course revs go up or down irrespective of travel speed. The clutch is fine cos it takes off well and pulls up hill well.
The rev pulses move the vehicle in surges of thrust. After all, it is a space ship!
The erratic low-pitch clatter is not related to engine speed at idle, it is there, then not, then there again. No boing or hiss.

It is booked in for a computer plug-in diagnosis which can't really tell you if a turbo bearing is on the way out, But it couldn't be a turbo bearing cos the clatter is to low speed and thankfully, the excelleration is great and there is smooth delivery of torque from any revs.

It's just that I need to drive to the country and back on Saturday and it feels like it shouldn't be driven that far before sorting this out.
Cheers for the reply mere Earthling.
Space-Ship 3 over and out.

Roger that!
Sounds like it may just need an 'Italian tune-up'!
If you haven't already, change your air and fuel filter, fill it up, and add some diesel fuel system cleaner/additive.
Get out on the motor way and give it warp factor 9!
I remember when, for what ever reason, my Vito felt a bit sluggish and lazy.
I did the above, got it on the motorway, and gave it a 'boot full'!
Cleared out the cob webs!??
Now it feels like it wants to go.
Too much pottering around is not good for any thing.
Jump to light speed, and may the force be with you!?
