Hello all.... Well I have a question. I have a 92 300e and so far it runs ok. I have never owned a w124 and the closest thing I have to a Mercedes is a Crossfire, but it's a totally different era in engines. Well her is my question, I notice while driving, the car (300e) makes a whining noise coming from the front of the car. It happens when I give it some gas and its above 2k rpm only. The harder I accelerate the louder the whine. It almost sounds like a supercharger... I have tried the search function but the closest answer I get is Smog Pump related. The Smog Pump does make noise when I first start the can in the morning and it sounds like a rattle snake to me but it goes away once the car is warmed up. Well I just want to know if anyone is familiar with this whine.
Well I hope this year is going good for everyone and thanks in advance.

I can't say that I'm familiar with that particular noise but at the high miles on your car I'd be looking very carefully at the serpentine belt idler pulleys (including the fan idler pulley/bearing/bracket). All the idlers have probably been replaced by now but if not they're all done...

Could be as simple as a slipping serpentine belt, but as other suggest check the bearings on all the rotating things that touch the belt. Have you tried turning stuff off to see if the noise goes away? Could even be your blower for the heat/AC.

Absolutely agree with checking the idlers for the serp belt to make sure they aren't near the end of life. If you are mechanically inclined and do this carefully (don't slip) you can put a long screw driver on the idler mounting bracket and listen for either the fan idler bearing or the serp idler (above the alternator) to see if they are whining. You should also check your power steering pump reservoir to make sure it isn't running low - they can whine when running low on fluid.

If you don't feel comfortable with this you can take off the serp belt and feel/listen to the idlers when you spin them by hand. If they don't spin smoothly or make any noise at all, they are shot.
