W202 C280 First the fuel pump next the Transmission...PLEASE HELP

Hello Everyone,

I am new here and this is my first post. I have browsed around the threads the past few months and have to say many of you here seem to know a thing or two about benzs....so with that being said I was hoping that someone could help me out since I am stuck in some really sticky car trouble..:crybaby2:

****************CAR INTRODUCTION*************************

First let me tell you about my car, It is a W202 1996 C280 100k. I have owned it for 2 years now and have done some extensive custom work on it. She is Gun metallic grey with a blacked out grill*also in gun metallic*and I have a sports suspension kit on her which has her sitting about 7cm of the ground. Tucked nicely under her fender are 19 inch triple chrome Lorinser wheels with low profile tires. For the lights she has smoked LED tail lights with a HID license plate light. Also clear head lights with strobe lights in the front headlights and the tail lights. It has about 5 different strobe settings. The switch is located on the dash just near the headlights switch. I also have a rear view camera in the back which is linked to a rear view monitor mirror. I also have monitors in the headrests 7inchs,sun visor 12.2 inch wide, dash 7inch.etc. There is a total of 7 monitors in the car.And yes the stereo bumps. DVD,NAVI,ipod ready, usb reader, memory card reader,ETC....and that about covers the custom work.......

*********************THE PROBLEM**************************

:crybaby2: Since I have had the car I have taken care of her like a baby...oil changes, washing, driving carefully...etc......Then out of the blue I start having some trouble with the idling, because my car is customized, a Benz dealer will not check my car. Oh! I forgot to mention that I am located in Japan and they have strict laws when it comes to owning a custom car...but thats another story...So I had to take my car to a guy who had to go through another guy to get my car looked at. He tells me they used the computer to check out the car and the only problem they found is that I need a new fuel pump. So I said ok lets change it and get my baby back to me. Though it cost $1,200 to fix it I really had no choice. But this is where things take a wicked spin for the worst! The guy calls me and tells me my car is ready, so I go check my car...it starts and the idling sounds fine. So I pay him and off I go. I drive about 2 kilometers *mind you this is a few minutes after I left* stop at a red light...the light turns green and I hit the accelerator and what do I get.....rrrrmmmm rrrrmmmm MY CAR WILL NOT MOVE...I am like WTF!!! So iI turn off the car and turn it on again but still nothing the car will not move. I check the other gears and the only gear that works is REVERSE....There goes my tranny....now where I am puzzled is that I never had any trouble with my transmission before..no slipping,no noises...nothing. On top of that when they took my car in and used the computer to check my car they said the only problem was the fuel pump which I paid for a few minutes before the tranny went....Some luck huh?
So how could my tranny just go? Did those guy do some shaddy sh*t? Could it possibly be some electonical problem that made the tranny go STOP? Why does reverse still work? I am not to knowledgeable with the mechanics of cars but I really need any advice as to what you guys might think the problem is and any soulution to fix it would be great. Since I dont trust anyone out here ...I mean it might be something as small as a part that cost $20.00...I dont know...but everyone out here says $3,000 to $6,000 to fix...I am broke and cant afford it...All my money is sitting in all that custom work...:crybaby2: If anyone could help I would be :bowdown:greatful. Also I do appreciate anyone who took out the time to read this long post.

Tranny woes

First off, Welcome to the Forum!

Second, Was your car originally a U.S. Model? It's important to know what model of Tranny we are dealing with to give you good answers. It's likely you have a model 722.4 with the year if it was a U.S. issue originally. Run your V.I.N. number through this website and it will tell you all the original equipment that your C came with.

Mercedes-Benz Club Russia | Mercedes-Benz / VIN

Your Tranny (IF it's a 722.4) should not have had such a catastrofic failure so easily. The 722.4 is a Hydralicaly controlled unit. The later models in the U.S. '97 on were electronically controlled units and are prone to the type of failure you described at the drop of a hat.

Let's figure out what we are dealing with and go from there. There are many posts that you can search out as well (using the search fuction in the upper right of your screen). Uses terms like "Transmission problem" etc.

You should post your Beauty in the Sticky Thread with all the great custom work that you have done on your C.

I'll await your reply and see if we can't get you some answers.

Good Luck & Welcome to the Forum!

I ran the VIN number for the transmission model

:bowdown:First I'd like to say thank you very much for your reply. I was beginning to think I would not get one. Also thank you for the link. I had been looking for a site such as that but had no luck.

I bought my car here in Japan. As I looked on the inner part of the drivers side door *which is on the right side* I saw a plate which says Made in Germany then above it, Mercedes Benz Japan CO.,LTD. Which makes me guess this car was made in Germany for Mercedes Benz Japan, so no this is not a US model.

So after checking that sight and running my VIN, this is what came up. *I am leaving out the part which lists the options. Though if you need that part I can post it.

VIN WDB202028********
Model C 280 , C36 AMG
Chassis 2020282F085531
Engine 104941 22 017603
Transmission 722424 03 512629
Order 0 4 839 14583
Lights BOSCH
Wiper SWF
Delivery date 30.03.94
Dealer Japan (839)
Interior cloth "Magnum" black (601)
Paint
199 metallic blue-black (с 01.01.1983)

As I mentioned before I am not so car savvy when it comes to fixing a problem such as this. But as you said the 1996 722.4 transmission should not have a problem as such, just makes me think more that the guys who changed my fuel pump did some shady ****. By the way do you know where the fuel pump is located in my car? Also how much does it usually cost to change one? I think I was ripped off!

Well the most important thing now is figuring out what is wrong with my tranny and getting my baby back on the road.:eclipsee_steering:

I am grateful for any help or support you can bring my way:thumbsup:

"By the way do you know where the fuel pump is located in my car? Also how much does it usually cost to change one? I think I was ripped off!"
On mine its underneath a plastic cover passenger side near rear wheel. I suppose at a dealer in the states, ballpark 400.00 for the pump plus an hour or 2 for labor, 800 bucks out the door perhaps with tax. Things like beef are more where you are there too so maybe its the going rate there for auto work as well.
I find it hard to believe just an idle issue would turn out to be a fuel pump problem without a pressure test to verify. Could be anything like a bad MAF, dirty air filter, bad coil, plugs/wires, etc.

So did the other 'mechanic" actually have a SDS or a fuel pressure tester to confirm this? Was there actually a check engine light or just a guess? From what you mentioned it sounds like you should try to do some of the work yourself or find another mechanic and just move on. Usually after a repair is done a test drive should be done.
I posted this info before maybe you have found it already concerning 722.4 tranny issues, http://w126.pp.ru/akp722.pdf
Have a look and we will give you an test. :p
I have the electronic type tranny unlike yours, there have been issues when someone spills their drinks on the console and causing problems. B

Just reverse usually indicates a problem with the B2 Band - either with the thrust pin or the the the b2 piston. Both issues can be addressed with the transmission in the car (unless the band itself is worn/broken/not likely at your mileage). PM me and I will send you more documentation than you will ever want on the problem and the solution.

I had this exact problem and fixed it myself on my back with zero auto trans experience. Even at a good trans shop, it shouldn't cost anywhere near what you are being quoted. With 100,000 or so miles on the trans, it is definitely worth fixing. Michael

Thank you for taking out time to help me. I wish I had talked to you guys earlier but.....

When I get a chance this weekend I am going to try and locate the fuel pump...though they supposedly installed a new one. Where it all started was with erratic idling. The Benz dealer would not check my car since it has been customized. Dealers (actually all mechanic shops) in Japan are no longer allowed to touch a car that has been customized in anyway. So I was left searching for someone until finally the car would not start anymore.

Finally found a guy and he took my car, though I was really nervous I had no choice. As for tests, I have no idea. They said they needed to get the car to Benz so they can use a computer to check my car. The guys friends friend worked at Benz and was supposedly going to check my car on the down low. And so supposedly they did....and he said it was the fuel pump. They charged me a grand and I waited a month to get my car back..and that was with me staying on their back along with a few arguments.

So as for MAF, dirty air filter, bad coil, plugs/wires, etc....I don't know...also SDS or a fuel pressure tester, also don't know. Also don't understand that stuff that well,I need to study.:).........I was left in the dark....even when I asked them to produce proof that they used this so called computer to test my car they said they couldn't since they had to do it on the down low. I am just hoping that they didn't pull my tranny out and put in a F***ed one ....I mean they had my car for a month.....:confused:Maybe I am letting my imagination get the best of me.

Oh and there was no check engine light/warning lamp.

Which brings me to a question....sorry if it is a stupid one. So every car has an original chassis number/VIN number right? Is it the same for Transmissions too? I know C280 W202 transmissions starts with 722.4 but the numbers that follow are they all the same for every Transmission of that car model or does every Transmission have a unique number. So then I can know if those guys pulled out my Transmission and put in a screwed transmission. Cause it is so weird how having no problem to just Dead as soon as I picked it up from them.....

Is there a way I could get a hold of this computer to check my car myself?

Appreciate all your help:bowdown:

:bowdown:Thank you for your help and time. It being the B2 Band/Thrust Pin/B2 position...didn't really understand but searched the net and got some info on what those parts are. So are you saying if that is the problem I should be able to fix it myself with no experience? What about after it being fixed (if that is the problem) Would I have to reset my cars on board computer? From what I herd after any work is done on these cars, you have to reset it. Is this true and if so how would I go about doing so? Anyways I will PM you for that info but I will also continue using this thread till this problem is resolved, so in case if someone else runs into the same deal, they will have a place to use as a guide for help.

:surrender:I await any and all help

I think CJ is saying your car looks cool and you need to post it in the W202 Picture sticky thread located in the blue shaded area on the top of the first page of threads. Also, post one here so we can all be further inspired to help you with your issues ;). Michael

Got it! By the way thanks for your email. I am going to read all that material and when I am done and need more questions answered (which I am sure I will) I will contact you again. Also I appreciate your volunteering to talk me threw it need it be, but not sure how that would work with the time difference US/Japan.....

Well I will put up some pics here, though I don't think I have any of the interior on this pc.

Thanks again Michael

I keep weird hours, you can call me anytime. Michael

Me tryin to be a Mechanic...LOL

Hello Everyone,

Let me start by saying thanks to all who have advised especially Metafly:thumbsup: Now let me tell you where I am at. I removed the tranny mount (there is also an L shaped which I removed), tranny oil pan, B2 Piston and pin and finally the filter. A lot of oil came out since I was not able to get the drain alan screw undone. But it was no disaster since I put a bucket under it though it was a balancing act in a tight space in an awkward position.

The B2 piston cover was a PAIN to remove...as you can see in the picture below I have scared the edges from using a flat head screwdriver to remove it. Can I use that same cover? Do I need to buy a new one because of the scars?

I pulled out the B2 piston and I can see the pin was intact. The B2 piston was also intact, so I proceeded to remove the pin. As you can see in the picture below all seems to be fine except there is a little scaring on the tip of the B2 band...I don't know why since my flat head did not come in contact with that part. So, Can I still use this B2 band or does it need to be replaced? Do I need to replace the pin which goes into the B2 band?

As I checked the oil pan for any pins or metal, I found a small shaving of metal but that was about it. No other metal or pins. So I am left scratching my head:confused:

Next I decide to take down the filter (be careful quit a bit of oil comes out here too) and on top of the filter was a small pin, about an inch in size. It seems that the same thing that happened to another member named Jacom7777777 has happened to me. But I can't get a hold of him to see how he fixed it:( As you can see in the picture there seems to be a small bit shaved off the pin which makes me think that small metal shaving I found in the oil pan belongs to that pin. So I need some help, someone who could walk me threw how to get this pin where it needs to be. Also help with these caliper settings. Finally do I have to buy a new small pin and or anything else?

All help is greatly appreciated! This is my first ever attempt at working on a car and with your help and guidence I will be driving my BBBBBENZ in no time!

Regards,

Christian AKA BenzHell

You are almost a mechanic Christian. you have done wonderful job.
have you removed the transmission out of the car and removed the B2 piston?
there was a very narrow space to touch the B2 piston cover??

Well for this procedure you do not need to remove the transmission. You only need to remove the transmission mount and the tranny will drop a few inches. Yes it is a really tight space to work in and pretty difficult to get the B2 piston out but it is possible. I am just wondering how am I going to get that small pin in and the B2 piston back in :D You will find all the information in the email. After you read it but still and questions, feel free to ask. That's what I am doing:thumbsup:
