Thanks for that link. As usual, such sites take me wandering. The comments at the bottom were most enlightening. I even learned about trains a bit.

I'd love to know if the Merlin they recovered is salvageable. That would be a far more rare find than the Browning .303s

Both the .303 and the US WWII model, the .50 cal are both still in current use IIRC.

A friend of an Ex RUC officer said that said Ex RUC officer ( who was an honest to God gun nut:bowdown:) welded together a Bren gun that had been seized by the RUC & cut up so as to render unusable.
Not so, apparently, a wheen o runs with the MiG ( or back then it could even have been stick or Oxy acetylene) and her be firing as good as new.
Said RUC gun nut had such faith in Czech design, British engineering and most importantly his own welding that he simply lay down behind the butt & fired her off.
None of that namby pamby remote firing nonsense for him.:D
