Finally bought a car...

I bit the bullet today and purchased a 1991 560SEL. I'd been looking for over 2 months and finally found the one that did it for me. It's white with a palomino interior and has 119,000 miles.

Only two problems: First, the sunroof is VERY slow to operate. Will not tilt up completely and you have to press the switch multiple times to get it to move. I'm going to pick up some MB sunroof grease and see if that helps.

Second, the "dead pedal" or driver's left foot rest is broken into a bunch of pieces. Anyone ever have this happen? Will check at dealer tomorrow to see if it's available.

Finish on the rims is a goner, so I already ordered new. Also ordered new headlight "doors" as the current ones are BAD. Will look into Euro lights later. Anyone know of a good place for them at a good price?

Weather here is nasty, so I'll post pics when it clears and I can clean it up.

Thanks to everone for their advice and guidance during my hunt for the right car. The information on this board is invaluable.

Hope to be on the board regularly.

Thought of one more thing. The car has the original stereo - I think a light or two may be burned out. Is it possible to replace these DIY, or should I just live with it until I can't stand not having a CD player?

hey! congratulations, i´m looking forward to see pictures!

i would first check all the fuses, for the light bulb problem.
1) sunroof slow... just like you mentioned, see if the grease would help it move faster. If not, it could be a motor on its way out.

2)"dead pedal".. do you mean the emergency brake? I don't know how someone could have shattered the brake bedal. You CAN go to a dealership.. but I would bet it will be an expensive purchase. I would recommend a junkyard.

3) headlight doors. I have seen someone selling NEW ones on ebay for $88 each. Honestely, instead of pay close to $200 with shipping... it would be much wiser to purchase euro headlights as you can get them for that price.

Congrats on the car.. I too recently bought a car and I know you must be feeling good about it. [8D]
Hello Tray,
Just grease most likely won't make much of a difference. You'll need to pull the rails up top (few screws each side) and clean in there as Best you can. However, it may be a little late.. There is an adjustment for the clutch on your sunroof motor.. I Think it mentions how to adjust it in the owners manual.
Yes, the dead pedals are available, I sell quite a few as it is a common item.

I second the notion, forget the head light doors.. I can get a pair of euro's for right about 6.

When ever I purchase a new car I change All the fluids.. Brake, oil, transmission, power steering, hyd., differential, coolant. It's good to Know where you are starting from. While doing the brake fluid it also gives you a chance to inspect the brakes, see how the discs/pads are.
Just as a bit of info, but if you remove the finish from the stock wheels they actually look rather sharp underneath. I did as much to my 91 wheels before I picked up my AMG's.

Let me know if I can be of any further assistance!

Please elaborate. I did a search in the previous threads but came up short. Maybe I didn't look hard enough...
Welcome![:)]

Looking forward to the pics of your new 560.

Some air craft grade paint stripper and some various grades of steel wool gives you the following look.

I beleive there is a write up on MBCoupes.

Thanks for the information. I tried the local dealer today for the sunroof grease and they claim to not sell it. Anyone know where else to check?

They also checked on the dead pedal - said it is part of a larger piece and would be $140 - and in black. Are these available separately and in the proper color (palomino?)

As for the headlights... I found the doors for $54 each, so I think I'll live with those for a while. Anyone have good instructions on removing and replacing these? I used search, but didn't find much.

I plan to do a full servicing of all fluids/filters in the next week or so. One plus is I have a receipt from the previous owner showing the timing chain/rails etc. were replaced in the last 7,000 miles.

Thanks again,

Trey

You can purchase the sunroof grease from Ebay:

I remember making that add..[:p]

Or, you can buy it from me for 9$ shipped...

I'll write w/ quotes on the other bits tomorrow!
