Got a 1997 E200 with a rogue ignition module. Think I might need to replace it.
Is it a diy type job or doed it need to go into Merc Workshop.

Sometimes the car wont get to start position. and some times key wont come out.

So far I have not been stranded but I think the module may soon let me down.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Thank you.

CG,

Any job is DIY. It all depends on how handy you are with the correct tools.:D

This being said, ask your dealer to show you one of the ignition modules. Its a pretty amazing piece of technology in one small package. I have a in-op one as a paperweight.

And I believe the key is coded to the module. So unfortunately, your options may be limited to having the "stealer" do the replacement.:(

Just my $0.02. Let us know how you come out.

If I understand your post correctly, you don't have the problem with ignition module, but with the ignition tumbler. We do have thread (in stickies >>>>Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum > Mercedes-Benz Sedan Forums > W210 E-Class > Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!! key won't turn ignition Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!! key won't turn ignition ) about tumbler replacement.
The replacement can be bought for about $120 and theoretically it is easy replacement, but any false move during the job will make the steering wheel blockade going into permanent lock, bringing the cost sky high. I would consider that top DIY level.
Sometimes better to pay the dealer.
