You should have a 16 pin diagnostic connector near your battery. It should have a pushbutton with an LED next to it. From this you can read the emission related fault codes. You can also build a simple code reader to read codes from the other pins. Early 90s 300Es were not as sophisticated as the next generation, but it's worth learning how to do. Try a search - there should be lots more info in the archives.
