Hi Guys,

I drive 2006 S500 and considering to upgrade to S550. I found locally a S550 2008 4matic with 69000Mi. Engine and transmission are strong. body is not rusted (Florida car) This is it about positive side. The bad: command system is dead, trunk can not be opened, airmatic need service and car is too high, need all tires, cosmetically needs serious touch-up and one fender needs paint, funny noises from undercarriage, car was seating for 3 years, windshield is cracked. Repossessed but clean title. Car was not babied, looks dirty and neglected. The sellers wants $6000. When I broad to a dealer for pre-sale inspection THE REFUSE TO TEST IT (!) claiming that just visually it need more that $15K at dealer price to restore (however it include replacing aftermarket brakes and rotors - in my S500 I always used aftermarket brakes and rotors with great success). What do you think is a fair price if I want the car as a project and consider to do lot of repairs myself. Can I fix it if I get SDS system? What may be the worst case I need to inverts in the car?

I have no way to estimate the cost of doing that job accurately, but I think you'd be into a HUGE investment of your time (perhaps years), and very possibly wind up putting more money into it than buying a car with similar mileage, and without all those problems. If such is your hobby, have at it - but personally (and after having invested WAY too much money and time bringing a '78 450SL into daily driver condition a few years ago) I would pass it by.

Pricing a 2008 S550 4-Matic in Philadelphia with 70,000 miles yields roughly $17,600 as a fair dealer price, and about $15,400 for a private party sale. I think there is significant risk you'd spend more than the $9K to $11K price difference restoring the car you're looking at, as well as buying the SDS system you'd need for doing your own diagnostics.The need for paint on a fender may indicate sheet metal damage - and if that broke the zinc coating on the sheet metal, you will be into rust.

Walk away.

Just say no. that car is ready for the scrap yard. It isnt worth $1000. Unless you are already an expert mechanic already using MB diagnostic systems it would be an endless money pit.

Sell your car private party and leave the stealerships out of any trade in.
