Hey all,

Changed the oil/filter last Friday (first time changing the filter myself on the B, second time changing oil on the B, both times using a Princess Auto extractor) - really easy, except I need a nice extension for the oil filter. Turning the ratchet in between the firewall, engine, and coolant tank was not fun, and I'm done doing things the hard way like when I was a young punk.

Before I go looking for a long a$$ extension, or two short ones and a pipe to have a buddy weld one up...

What are you guys using?
Length?
Where'd you buy it?

I haven't seen places selling very long extensions.

Thanks all!

edit: unrelated, but for others searching...filter cover nut size is 27mm, two o-rings in the oil filter kit I got from the dealer on the Queensway (Etobicoke suburb of Toronto). One o-ring goes on the nut, the other above the threads on the oil filter cover. Oil filter cover tightening torque: 25Nm or 18ft-lb. Oil 0W40, about 5L needed...add 4L, then a little bit at a time and keep checking, until oil between the marks...in my case about 4.5L. Do NOT overfill above 'max'.

13 inch extensions together should do it, I use two 3/8 extensions, one 10" and couple of 3" cheap crappy tire ones...

See here...

I thought that this was all well explained in the "Check Your Oil Now" Sticky above.

I posted this info a looooong time ago. I used a 1/2 inch drive ratchet with my long and medium extensions together giving ~ 15"s of reach.(Don't buy tools that you don't need).

I was the first on this forum to post a DIY oil change for the B. I used a 1 +1/16" socket "as a perfect fit" as my tools were mostly pre- metric ....and I also don't have a 27mm 1/2" drive socket. A bit of electrical tape holds the 2 extensions together and the socket on depending if you feel that they might separate in use as you're lifting the cap and filter out. The little rubber "O" ring is used to told the socket on the plastic filter cap/nut but my little O ring always shows aging and cracks when I go to change the oil.

Slowly lift it out and not a drop is left behind..........

Ya Devours I saw your oil change thread but flew over the extension size part and needed a quick overall size while at the shop.
