My 560SL is in need of a new exhaust system. I plan to replace from the headers back and eliminate the resonator and cat. My question is, what options are out there for non-stock mufflers besides those designed as an OEM replacement.

Check out these guys. Timevalve Manufacturing - Stainless Steel Exhaust Systems and Catalytic Converters for Mercedes Benz, Vintage Ferrari, and other Classic Cars Stainless and they eliminated the resonator on my '73. Not sure if they will eliminate the cat.

Thanks but this is what I am wanting to do. In the photo below, eliminate the parts between the red lines. looking for options to replace the muffler, blue arrow, with non stock alternative.

from the y pipe back to the muffler would be a straight pipe

If you intend keeping you car for years, definitely go stainless whatever you choose.

I understand what you want. That is why I related my experience with TimeValve and their willingness to to work with me. Your best option is probably to do what Nobby did. Find a local shop that deals with rodders, drifters, etc.
