Gang,

It has come to management's attention that some of the conversation appears to be channeling Jay Mewes, Tony Montana, Jules Winnfield and Eric Cartman. While most have no problem with this expressiveness and emotion, there are a few who have their size 48 WalMart panties in a wad and have made a request that we become somewhat more civilized. Note: not all complaints have come from active members, instead from those who wander through.

This does not mean in any way to back off on any positions or on any observations. It just means to use your indoor voice and articulate that position in a more interesting and clever way. It should be fun.

So, in the interest of clubhouse harmony, let's back it off a couple of notches and see how it goes.

Peace out,

Bear, that Mod Guy

BWOT MODERATION UPDATE: Live Free or Die Hard

This is a followup to the previous Swearingen STICKY. Apparently the message did not get through to everyone. I tried to be clever and subtle.

Now, due to the spiral of hostility on BWOT, we are going to implement a couple of minor changes. Most folks won't notice a difference, a couple of folks will.

Language
Regarding language. There are two thoughts. First, as requested in the Swearingen Thread, folks should try to find a creative and interesting way to articulate their position. On the other hand, there is nobody who is going to censor your language.

Second, if you are looking for a forum where profanity isn’t allowed, this isn’t it. If you want a PG rated forum, go to DISNEY.COM. I am sure you will be welcome. DON’T criticize or correct someone’s language simply because YOU don’t like it.

Issues of Moderation
BWOT has been, intentionally a very sparsely moderated forum. One of the reasons folks like to come here is because we allow thought from every perspective to be aired and we allow everyone to articulate their thoughts. No subject is off limits and, with absolute minimal exception, every view is tolerated. With that freedom, however comes a certain responsibility. The lite moderation has been successful, for the most part folks have acted like adults and respected each other, whether they agreed with each other or not. As a result, over the past year or so the number of folks banned can be counted on one hand. In the past year, something has begun to change and folks have been less responsible in their actions and less respectful in their words.

As of now, here are some things at which we are specifically looking.
  • Personal Attacks
  • Stalking
  • Baiting
If you post up a clever little one liner, intended to provoke anger or just to piss someone off, you need to rethink your BWOT strategy.

Everyone is guilty at some point, on some level. At times these comments are included in the context of the discussion and that makes perfect sense and are fully expected. Other times, they are purely for personal attack only, out of the blue. That needs to stop…by everyone. Threads started for this intent will be deleted.

Multiple Threads
On subjects for which there is much conversation, DO NOT post up a second, third, fourth or fifth thread on the subject if one already exists. Simply add your link, copy and thoughts to the current thread and let the conversation continue. That will help keep continuity, will help members more easily follow the train of conversation and will help moderation of the threads.

Should a second one be posted, it will be deleted or combined, resulting in awkward thread continuity.

Until folks can get back to that level of equilibrium where everyone treats BWOT as the private clubhouse for everyone, full of adults that are responsible, we will tighten moderation just a bit. With a very good mix of politically diverse moderators, that cover much of the spectrum, we don't ever have to worry about this board being moderated with a particular political tilt. The conversations before any actions safeguard that from happening.

Everything in Moderation

A combination of the two stickies.

Thanks to all for reading them and following them [for the most part :) ]. We are well on our way toward achieving a somewhat more civil clubhouse. And that is appreciated by all.

"So, Ed, how do you guys go about moderating these little spats between members?"
"It's challenging sometimes. Every now and then, you'll have a knock down, drag out fight that you just have to delete all of it and tell the folks to stand down . Other times, I just pay attention to who's posting about stuff, and who's posting about other posters. That's usually what you have to guide folks away from."
"But what if the stuff is abundantly annoying to some posters?"
"Well, that's where the ignore feature is underutilized. For some reason, the annoyed think it's some sort of a sign of weakness, like they're conceding to someone that annoys them. Even when they ignore, they feel the need to make sure the ignored knows it. I don't get that, I'd rather eliminate an annoyance, and ignoring works."
"And if it doesn't?"
"Usually ends in a self-destruction, or, if the annoyer engages, mutual self-destruction. Kinda sad."
I'm going to add one thing to this . . . taunting people who don't like you is a form of trolling. See the last line above.

SMH

Cool it, guys.

You want a non-cesspoolish adult conversation on current events? Then do that yourself, you are responsible for your own behavior, not the guy posting up what you consider to be dribble from questionable news sources. Don’t want to read dribble from questionable news sources? Then ignore it and the poster. Take on the dribble or not, but when you crawl into the cesspool and splash around, guess what? You are part of the cesspool and not a victim of it.

A “light touch” towards moderation has been the norm in OT, as the subjects discussed (politics, religion, etc) tend to provoke the passion of the opposing views, but the light touch has had a limit of allowing “you’re a (insert your favorite profane derogatory term) and here’s why,” with the why being the poster’s dissection of the position and all its faults. It is when posts become purely about each other that we’ve deleted posts, closed threads, and waved and used the ban hammer.

So, posts have been deleted, hate to close threads that have had decent on-topic discussion but will, and we’re a little weary from waving around the ban hammer. One way or another, we’re going to get back to the “light touch.”

PS - whining with your views on this diatribe and on moderation/moderators will do you no good and will be deleted.
