From what I can figure out, the '81 280SL I bought last week has not undergone the Federalization process. No Fed sticker & such.

The odometer reads about 234,000. Would that be Kilometers instead of miles? The speedometer works but the odometer and trip meter don't.

It would depend. Your odo will be in whatever your speedo reads in, if you know what i mean.

Although most of Europe is in km, don't forget that the UK is still in miles.

Look in the inside of the drivers door for an import plate and see if it has the bars welded in the doors. If it does it has gone throught some form of federalization. If you need to get a safety inspection don't say anything about missing hardware.

Sounds like a cool car. Is the odometer in only kmh or does it display miles also?

Don't think so chassis number is properly stamped and no signs of tampering.
I will check engine and trans numbers to se if they match data card.

It reads in both Kmh and Mph. Pulled the cluster out yesterday speedo unit is different than my extra one. Damn the luck.

Oklahoma doesn't have inspection thank goodness.

If the speedo dial shows large MPH with smaller Km numbers, then the odometer is in Miles.
If you only have Km on the dial, then your odometer is in Km.

Thanks. It is miles then. Now I have to find a place to repair it. I can see the stripped gears.

As for confirming the numbers I verified the trans number today and when I pulled the dash cap off, there was the VIN plate.
