I've recently expanded my search for a Euro coupe and ran across this ad on CL:

1984 Mercedes 500 SEC Coupe

Emailed the seller, who provided the photo attached. Talked to him earlier today, pleasant gentleman. Said this is a car that lived most of its life in Rancho Santa Fe, CA, and then in Pt Loma (San Diego), lately belonging to his ex-wife who rarely drove it. He said he had wires/spark plugs/battery replaced and new Michelins put on before driving it across the desert last year and that it had been stored in his son's insulated aircraft hangar at Williams Gateway since then, being started occasionally.

VIN WDB1260441A011537, mileage 203k, currently titled in WA state. Original paint, monoblock rims. Smog history looked OK recently. Known issues are cracks on drivers seat, small rust spot under rear window (I suspect rear window seal), sunroof lag on closing.

I'm undecided if this is worth flying out to PHX for but if anybody is in the area and wants to check it out (and ends up not buying it), I'd love to get your opinion. I have no relation to the seller but he sounded like a honest and upfront person on the phone. Cheers!

I live about 10 minutes away from the Williams Gateway airport...

If you're interested, I know mechanics in the area that can check the car out for a PPI. Then you'd know if it's worth it. If that's something you'd want to do, shoot me a PM. Car looks great

Wheels?

Good looking SEC, hope it works out.

What are those wheels in the pic? I've seen 'em before...

Thats the one I went and drove and posted on here. Much needed in my eyes but it is straight. Did have the rust spot at rear window. I fixed the interior lights for him as well as a few other minor things when I drove it. Over all it is one that could be brought back but I thought closer to 1500 was a good starting point for price.

What the hell is it with Phoenix and Euro MB's?????

When I was there last year to rescue the Phönix, there were at least 4 Euros in the yard there and DBMB got THE most rare of rare Euro's there and there have been several more in the last year there.

I think you guys have the highest per capita of Euros in the world! Even more than SoCal!

I don't know but I am finding about 4 a month. Have checked them all out. Will keep looking for those rare well maintained ones. Always post the ones that I think are worth a look by someone. This one is but I think it was a bit optimistic on price as it needed some things. Compared to any of the well maintained ones I have driven everything felt loose. Interior was noisy as well and I am used to whisper quiet.

EURO in Arizona

The reason I think is it is so damn easy to get a title there. I had a 1982 500 sec with import papers and some truly horrible DOT complience paperwork, bills that were obviously not from the car. It said headlights (still had Euro's) and the bills said changed to english gauges, yet they were all still metric. However in about 5 minutes they had passed it and given me a US Arizona title. Heck this is the state after you turn 35 you get a drivers license that does not expire until you are 60... really.... I assume my picture would be very different by then.
Just my 2 cents Bob

Thanks for the info guys. I've been wanting a Euro coupe to go with my Euro sedan..now I know where to look and whom to ask for help with it. Down here where I live, W126's don't seem to exist..much less a Euro.

Hey thanks for that, didn't put one and one together re: your prior post but that's one reason I posted it. I too felt that the 2500 price point was a bit ambitious given where the price point for this is generally headed, and considering that I paid 1750 for my 560SEC with none of these issues. I think I will let this marinade for a bit longer.

Cheers & Happy Thanksgiving!
